Biodiesel in 3rd Gen?

Anyone running high concentrations of biodiesel in a 2003 or later CRD?

Any problems?

I hope to start making the stuff in the next month or so and want to know if anyone's had any experience either good or bad. I figure no more than 50% bio in winter, possibly more in summer. Also figure I'll start with about 10% and increase from there if all goes well.

Thanks,

I ran B99 in one tank, but it was mixed with regular diesel so I'm guessing the mixture was around B50-60. The engine was smoother and quieter, no loss in performance but I did lose about 2mpg. The exhaust smelled good also.

I run around B50 in my '05 everyday and have run up to 100% - no problems to report except for a clogged fuel filter on the first tank. ~8% less mpg, but much smoother runing.

Enjoy it,

Cool - as long as no one is coking injectors or glazing cylinder walls I guess that's good news!

Personally if yo are making it yourself and loosing 2-3mpg who cares. You are still saving money because you are making it yourself

I don't know if you guys ever watch Trucks on Spike, but they did a show on biodiesel and the whole setup cost about $2,000 to get, but you get a 55gal mixing drum, and everything else you need to make it. All you need is lye, methanol (which a lot of you already use) and waste cooking oil. They say that you can make it for under $.50 a gal. I've been wanting to do this for a while.

I still haven't seen anyone test the biodiesel they made to see if it met ASTM standards. I would be greatly concerned about the amount of contaminates and water in the fuel.

You might want to check the Cummins web site . They are not real keen on bio. Pete

Cummins and Dodge are definately taking a...er...conservative...stance on it. We KNOW they wouldn't want to have to risk paying any warranty claims

BOB4X4, over at the TDR is a Cummins mechanic at a Dodge dealership in Riverside, CA. & has seen corrosion on the injector tips of some trucks using Biodiesel. Aparently, it suspends quite a bit of moisture in the fuel. Enough to cause problems. Basically, that is what he's seen in the shop.

Cool drying your bio

if you make your own bio-diesel. be sure to wash it good, then heat and dry it prior to testing it for moisture and ph. if you live in a moist climate, like myself. store it in a sealed container.

(prior to the wash, you can heat/distill the bio to recover the extra methanol. also you can distill the waste/glycerin, to recover as much methanol as possible. there's no reason to leave it in the bio or the waste. as the reaction is finished).

I've run up to a B60 mix in my truck a number of times (mixing manufactured Soy B100 or B99 with #2 dino petrol); but its usually around B20.

As long as my truck is under warranty, I'll never put any kind of homemade WVO bio homebrew in my truck - not willing to risk ruining something just to save a couple bucks. Heck, I'll go so far to say I'll never run WVO in my truck.
