Transfer case options

Transfer case options
I have my converted Chevy going but running 2wd since donor truck was a 1992 2wd 250. I am running the 518 and would like to keep it for overdrive. The question I have is about the strength of an early passenger drop np241. I know np241's are used in 94 up but driver drop. I realize the np205 was used in the diesels up to 1993 but locating and shipping for a reasonable price is difficult. Do you think a early np241 would hold up? Also any difference in a gas 4wd 518 tailshaft and housing compared to a diesel? I know the splines are the same but how about strength? Did the gas have a lock-up converter and would that affect me? I am a manual fan by heart but need an automatic around that is reasonably affordable to drive.

I have a 93 with a great motor, tired auto tranny,4x4 with dana 70 rear. Ican buy a98 2whl with auto (2500 with dana 70 rear for about 3k. Both trucks have good 5.9s,both are extended cabs. Also I have several gmc 3/4 ton diesels from late 80's and 1990 just sitting. CanI put transfer and axles from gmc or from 93 dodge behind the 98 auto tranny? thanks,Al

I am still only 2wd. Just haven't wanted to work on it lately, too busy riding in it. I have been told by a transmission shop an overdrive unit from a gas truck will work. I probably will try this route when I get back on it.
From all the info I have located the 93 transfer case will work behind the 98 transmission as long as both are autos or both manuals.
The spring pad width on a dodge front axle is different than a 70's-80's chevy. About 1 1/2" wider if I remember correctly. The Dodge axle should be a Dana 60 and a straight axle GMC 3/4ton (up to 1987) will be a GM 10 bolt. The 60 is stronger. GM used 60's in 1 tons.
I do like to hear the 241 is living behind the Cummins. Gives more options since the 241 seems to be more abundant and cheaper to buy than a np205.
One other route is to use a np203 from behind a 727 and drill the 6 bolt round pattern in the face. I know many do not like this case but I have had a few behind stout Chevy big blocks with no problems, just heavy. A shaft style part time conversion is the best way to convert. The benefit is these cases are a cheap and plentiful(if you do break it, just get another). I have several Dodge and Chevy np203's that were given to me. I may try it since I have a Dodge 23 spline case and a shaft conversion just laying around.

The diesel OD unit has more clutches and steels, therefore more holding capacity. You can get the diesel retainer plates to convert the gas housing to diesel capcities.

there is a Heavy duty 241 and a light duty 241.......you want a HD241. a LD241 will work obviously, but the HD has a thicker chain, larger case and a PTO port. Sure fire way to ID the HD241 is the PTO port.

I would not be overly concerned about that, I have a friend who is also on this site who puts 900 HP through a DLD (light duty), and it has been good to him.

well good luck for him then. my friend just put his DLD241 case into 3 or 4 peices with around 500hp.
and my point was originally.........if he has the choice, which it sounds like he does............. choose the DHD 1st and the DLD 2nd.
why wouldn't you choose the heavier one? over built and not needing it is better than underbuilt and broken, any day of the week.

I am pretty sure I have a np-205 behind a nv-4500 in a 318 gas '92 150 short bed. Talk about bomber drivetrain. I thought the tranny and transfer would be perfect behind a CTD in my '85 crew cab.
