which trans to use in an Excursion 12v?
New here and to diesels. Im putting a 12v in my 2001 Excursion and am trying to decide which trans. I am leaning toward a manual 5 or 6 speed. Anyone done a manual conversion? I tow a 10k pound trailer and want something bulletproof.

I would recommend the 48re. The 4R100 is known to be very problematic behind the Powerstroke, let alone a Cummins.
Who is going to drive the Ex? If it is just you and your buddies, sure get a manual. With a wife, maybe a auto wouldn't be so bad.

I know of 5 or 6 cummins powered BTS transmissions in Ford's that are holding just fine. Dockboy just dynoed in the high 800's with his. Rockin S has a 12v that is 650 to 700hp and has no problems.
My truck should be in the 550 hp range and I won't have a worry in the world with my BTS.

It will be driven only by myself. What adapters would be recommended for an auto? I can get a manual very resonably, what's the average cost of beefing up an auto. I assume I would also have to run a stand alone ecu?

I think I'll go with the ZF 6spd. I can get the trans, adapter plate and all the other parts for less than adapting an auto. Not to mention that the manual will be reliable. I always find myself out in BFE and have a breakdown. An auto would be nice for the wife, but she wont drive it anyway.
