What gear??

I was just kinda wondering which gear would you guys recomend me pulling in with this set up. 2005 NV5600 3.73 285 70 17 BFG AT. Juice with attitude stacked with Bullydog Powerpup, south bend dual disc. I figured my combo should be about 425 rear wheel horspower. This year I did 2 pulls with the juice and stock clutch. Both times pulled 3rd low a pulled 258 and 252. I was thinking of going either 4th low or 2nd high but was wondering what you guys with the 3rd gens are pulling in. Also will this combo be good enough to get me a full pull or at least close to one or will I need a new turbo to burn all the fuel I am dumping in there?

Naturally

if you are overfueled, all that smoke that exits ur pipe is power you could be using to get more distance in your pull. IMHO, you should dump a larger turbo in there and go ahead and clean up the air a little, not because smoke stinks, BUT because it will decrease ur EGTS as well. I love smoke its why i own a 12V. I have read of many guys pulling in your stated ranges, 4th low or second high... Me having a five speed and crap o la stock clutch, id go third and low (MAYBE) u havin ur six speed id go fourth and low.. and hope for the best.. stock clutches suck.. i need a southbend.. but for another while, its only wishful thinking..

Alot of your choice also, depends on the track conditions as well, and what tires you are running, Id go with AT's as ive stated before

Tx

Yeah I am going with the AT's. Some guys I have talked to with the 6spd go even 5th low but then again they may have a 4.10 gear ratio. I doubt I will have the funds to get a turbo before the pulls come up again but if I do I might go ahead and get it. I still need the dual disc and tires but that I will have for the next pulling season the turbo is a far stretch but who knoews.

At the least do not pull below 4th gear low range.
I am learning more everytime I pull. Make sure to really read the track and the sled.
Some sleds will be light until say 250' or so. Some will be heavy off the bat.
For the lighter sleds out the gate pull the highest gear you feel confident with.

This works for me:

4th Low Range= Heavy Sled, tight track, etc. This gear is about 20mph
2nd Hi Range= Moderate Sled and or Loose track etc. This gear is about 23-24mph
5th Low= Mud hole track, wet, Or very light sled. This gear is about 27mph

This is for AT type tires 33"/305 diameter.

PourinDiesel your truck is a lot more beefed up then mine you probably got about 100 horse on me do you still think I should go by the standards of the way you pull? I know last year about everywhere we went the track hooked hard but I did notice that some sleds are lighter than others. I heard pulling in 2nd high is hard on the transfer case don't know if it is true or not. The competion I pull with in some of these fairs isn't much though I think everywhere me and my brother went we where in the top five. He usually was in 2nd or 3rd and I was right behind him in 3rd and 4th and we both had stock clutches.

Even with a 100 horse less than me, pull at least 4th low.
Dont waste your time with 3rd Lo.

What you heard is right; 2nd high range is hard on the transfer case, clutch, and mainshaft in your 6 speed tranny.
But when you have enough power to run it, it can yield some nice results.

well there is two pulls this year that I am going to to expecially win. So what you are saying if I want to pull the fathest go 2nd high. I am probably only gonna do 4 pulls but there are 2 that I have a very good chance of winning. Last year I got 4th at both of them and the trucks that beat me only pulled within 10 feet from me.

The right gear is determined at the track, not before hand.

I know this but if the track is hooking fairly well and you are saying if I want a few extra feet to beat the competion the gear to go with is 2nd high.

I think I am going with the 12cb. But I might go with a different dual disc.

I love my 12cb, better than the Haisley Street puller, because it is Borg & Beck style pressure plate. The Haisley is diaphragm, just like the stocker.

i've yet to see a haisley clutch break, the disc may wear out but never break. when i was getting my clutch installed Van showed me a whole collection from of clutches from a few of the big clutch makers, where the center section had cracked in half. the scheid trucks also run haisley clutches

I wasn't talking about them breaking, just that for a streetable, yet sled-pullable clutch, the SBC has the superior pressure plate. The Haisley "hardcore" pulling clutches are awesome for sure!
