Billet Shafts

I'm about to add Billet imput, output & disk drum.

Do I need an intermediate? Do the factory intermidiate shafts ever break? I've been told both ways...." Don't bother"....and "doing all three is only safe way"

Also, How big a job is it?

I can't imagine that it would be an easy job changing it out but you gotta think about what your gonna be doing after you upgrade the shafts. If your gonna be doing a bunch of high boost launches do you really wanna a factory shaft still inside the tranny or do you want a shaft that you know your not gonna have to worry about? That's just how I look at it.

I was told that the stock intermediate was good up till 30psi launches, anything over that and you will need a billet. But then a friend of mine was told by the same person to get one for 20psi launches

I was told that having the front and intermediate shafts would be the best. That way the output shaft is the weakest of the 3. It is the easiest to replace, and will do the least amount of damage if it goes.

I'd rather not have to worry about replacing any of them but that's just me.

The stock intermediate shaft should take ~20 without any fatigue. They can fail anywhere from 30-55. If you have the supporting parts (front, rear lockers & traction bars, maybe slicks) and want to launch above 20, I'd consider the billet intermediate shaft. Otherwise, a 35 psi launch will only hurt the 1/4 time.

Thanks everyone

Brandon...Finally got ahold of Bill at DTT. He said same as you. Unless you have a serious drag set up....you just spin street tires over 20 psi launch and lose time...even in 4x4. Also, DTT is probably dropping imtermediate shafts due to lack of need/interest.

Hmm. If they do drop it then that's a $1000 less that I have to save for a built tranny. Although the thought of it snapping (and with my luck it would snap at a 5psi launch) would be on the back of my mind.

I have a DTT tranny as well with a billet input shaft, hub and output saft and was wondering how high of a launch could i sport without compromising the stock 3rd gear drum.

Anybody wanna swap 6 spd manual w/SB double disk for my spare freshly rebuilt 47RE w/TrippleLoc TC by ATS? I guess it would be easiest to swap with a 2WD truck. Shoot me an Email if interested.

Cheers,
Steve J

Isn't that limited by power, not boost psi (torque)? I was thinking ~450hp limit, but I can't recall where I've heard that before. In theory, you're limited to 20-25 with the stock intermediate shaft.

Your stock intermediate should hold 25psi all the time. If it has been modified by drilling holes or other means by your tranny builder you might have problems below that. Brandon yours will be fine all day at 25 lbs. Traction will be a problem with 265 tires at 25 lbs. or so depending on track conditions. It is better to pull the gearshift lever into low to apply the rear band if you are gonna do high boost launchs alot. I run a billet intermediate but never broke the stock one. We normally recommend the billet front drum if you are going over 500hp or towing more than 10000lbs. Tim

Well after talking to DTT today they said that if you want to do crazy power then you most definately need the billet drum. With that being said, I think I'm gonna change gears and have them just install a full tranny minus the shafts until I can afford that. I need a tranny bad (mine's starting to 200*+ pretty easily) and I can afford $4300 installed much easier than I can $6200.
