High Amp Alternators

High Amp Alternators
Where do you get them?
My alt. on the 12v has lots its ability to regulate voltage, I'll be around 11.8-12.1V at idle with out the grids on, with the grids on I saw 9.8V. 1500 rpm and it was up at 14.6V, which is higher than I have ever seen on the two trucks. Highest has been was 14.3, and that was in -40. Between the big batteries and the amount of running on the Espar I do in the winter time, I'm thinking the alternator goes to full current right away trying to recharge the batteries. I was thinking an alternator with higher amp out put would allow for a longer life since it isn't at 100%.
Between this, the miss on the cold engine, exhaust leak, fuel smell in the cab, I'm looking forward to a bit of warm weather to get some of these knocked off the list.

tate,
Usually low voltage at idle is a sign of failing brushes, especially if its an older alt, easy to check just pull the rear cover and 3 screws will pull the brush holder out.
I'm assuming a 12v alt is the same as a 24v alt
as for finding a higher amp alt I cant help

Any place that rebuilds starters & alternators should be able to help you out TATe. There was a place in the states i found online that built alts you could weld with, not sure if i still have the link.

This alternator is relatively new, I put in when I was at Hanna in Jan '09, so its less than two years old. That seems to be what I've been getting out of them, since thats how long the replacement in my dually lasted as well. The one in that truck is from Dec '07, but it hasn't seen many miles in the last two years.
I guess I'll call some local electric shops in the near future and see what they have to say.

Tate, par here in town sells a high capacity alternator as well as the standard 160amp. I usually have the voltage drop to zero when I have an alternator issues. Kicks out the alternator field coils on a over current. Happened to me last week, driving back from up north.
Mine only drops when the heater grids are on. Typically I'm around the 14.5-14.7ish area.

totally!! do the Jim Lane Leese-neville upgrade for the big class 8 alt. I think they've got a 160 or 180 for pretty cheap. little big of messing to fit it. but they seem to slide in pretty nice.

Reman 160 amp Leece Neville are going for about $175 ea on EPay.
I found 140 amp up through 320 amp auctions so there is a bunch of them out there.
Looks to be a pretty simple swap also, I know I'm probably going to go this route in the next little bit.
