best place to send turbos to be checked out

I want to send my turbos in somewheres to have them gone through make sure everything is top notch on them. Where is the best place to send them?

Kev, what you need to check? A good test for me is that I use my shop vaccum on the blower discharge. Make sure the turbo has lots of oil supply. You can just feed the oil by hand into the turbo. Insert the vaccum hose into the turbine housing. Block all the air holes, on both sides of the turbine housing (I used a shop rag). The turbo should spool-up decently, you can tell by the sounds of the turbo. You should get a decent discharge of air from the compressor discharge side. If the turbo fails to spool or their is no air discharge, then you have issues. Another way is to use your shop air compressor instead of the vaccum. Make sure that your adding oil to the turbo all the time. This is a very cool test. With enough air supply, you can do a complete performance test of the turbo. I want to rig up instruments one day and do some testing. My GT3582 turbo was discharging air almost much as my vaccum was.

Alamo will clean/recondition/test the turbos, but it will not be cheap. At the end of the day, you might not be any further along than what you are now. I could probably get you a deal, but its still isn't going to be cheap.

What do you want done? An Alamo rebuild for a HX-40 was $600, so you could use that as a baseline. One of your turbos will be more if it has to be rebuilt, as they will not have the parts in there shop. If you spend much more than that, you might as well buy new turbos. I priced out a S480SX, at $1280. To just get it cleaned up and have new seals put in, its hard to say. You could do most of that at home.

Check the shaft end play and side play. If the turbos are coked up, they will be difficult to rotate. If the seals are toast, you should indications of oil leaking. The spin test should be done with a hi grade oil, so the turbo can spin up decently. Large frame turbo, need more air flow to spool decently, but they should still spool.

Take pictures of the impellers? If they are erroded badly, you can tell. Impeller aren't that pricey, you just have to make sure that the turbo is balanced up real good, cause at 100000rpm, they will shake pretty good. If they don't leak oil, you have decent end play and radial movement on the turbo you should be good to run. I would do the air test to make sure that the turbo will have decent performance chracteristic. One day I have to rig something up for my garage. The biggest thing is to track the mass flow of the turbo, everything else you can calculate. If the manufacturer's impeller maps are close, you could guess. Alamo wants me to give them a hand building a test cell for their new turbo designs. I could always ask and see what they want to try.

mike you can buy a mass air flow kit from snap on ,,, not sure what there worth but i have seen them

Rob, you have any specs on the the flow device. I been trying to find a mass flow device that can measure up to 200lbs/min. I can use other flow devices, but they are pricey. Worst case, You could alway use a cheap orifice and a couple flanges. Use need 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe, to get a decent measurement. Put a flow device on the turbine side and compressor side. Pressure taps and a few temp measurements, you could verify the actual performace of that turbo and see if the manufacturer impellers perform like they have indicated. If they are any thing like gas compressor impellers, I doubt that they are even close.

Kev, what kinda of power did you make using a silver bullet turbo? You where above 700rwhp on fuel right. How hot was that turbo when you pulled?

I was 800 on #2. I neven noticed it getting too hot, like 13 1400 on the dyno. Maybe 1500 on the strip
