I hope the Smarty Jr disabling my EGR helps the carbon build up! I did the Smarty around 5k miles, so there is that... The fuel dilution from the DPF regen ain't so easy to get around while keeping it easy to get through smog checks.
Not to highjack, but I just picked up a TDI Golf for commuting (45mpg so far!) and with all of the smog and no DEF the oil stays a nice clear golden brown --- WHY?

The old glow plug VW Rabbit I had back in the 90's made the oil black pretty fast, but I just did my first 6000 mile oil change on the 93 Cummins, and it looked like ordinary gasser oil at that mileage. I suspect it'll pick up a bit more soot when I turn up the fuel, but black at 500 is ridiculous.

I thought it was the third injection event on the 2004.5 and later trucks that turned the oil black. I have a friend with a 2003 2500 5.9L HO and the oil stays much cleaner. Someone please correct me if this isn't true.

totally different animal on the 6.7 with DPF. an additional injection is done to heat the DPF to burn off particulate soot. i was just wondering because the VW has a DPFas well, but the oil stays clean

You have two choices sell the truck now or full deletes as there's no hope. I think I know which way you are leaning.
