At work we were talking about running my Dodge with home heating oil if I had too. Last night We all did a search and found every answer but the same. Some said yes just dyed red. Some said it will plug my injectors. Some said it will destroy the motor. Anyone know the truth and we can put this to rest? This week we will be talking about motor oil.

After all of the fact finding you gave me honest information. I own a $50,000 truck and would not try it plus I have natural gas in my house.

running home heating oil (off road diesel) in your truck is just as good as running on road fuel. this day and age there isn't one bit of difference in the fuel, it is all ULSD..just red. Now, it's different if you were to actually take the fuel your wanting to run in your truck out of your heating oil tank. Those tanks thru out the years collect a ton of rust at the bottom, and that is what you'd want to avoid. If your still wanting to run the Off Road fuel in your tank, i'd strain it before i ever ran it in my truck. If your lucky you can find some older heating/farm fuel that is High Sulfer Diesel.

Yes But this place is the one that gave me honest good information. I did a google and after reading my search thank God I have gas! Now monday I have some good information for work. We do not talk about guns,goverment or taxse just trucks!!!!!!

Home heating oil is ok. It will run just fine. Now if by chance you are some place and the Department of Transport or whatever they are called in your area decides to dip your tank to check your fuel and see the red dye that means fuel that is tax free then you are in big trouble and better have a big wallet....

I read inectors will clog. It will destroy your motor! I knew they put red dye in it. Also in my area home heating oil is $4.10 per gal. And diesel fuel is $3.78 per gal.

dude... heating oil is off-road/un-road-taxed Diesel. Same stuff they use in big yellow equipment. you can use it, but you would be breaking the law.

I remember years back on the farm. The fuel truck would come out and fill our above ground diesel tanks for the equipment and in the same trip pull up to the house and top off the tank for the furnace..... Same stuff just no road tax...

There's a page somewhere on the web that compares the properties of jet, home, kerosine, etc... fuels. They ranked them by properties most like the over the road diesel we can buy today.

This was years ago before ULSD.

Home heading oil even back then was the closest followed by Jet fuel if I'm not mistaken.

Apparently from the article this is one of the reasons the Military use diesel engines -- fuel flexibility in a pinch.

With the ultra-modern diesels I don't know if they have such flexibility -- unless the EPA doesn't care what the emissions are on military vehicles.
