What mileage to change Transmission Oil for 1st Time?
Hi Guys!,
At what mileage point do I need to change my Automatic Transmission Oil and Filter for the FIRST time?
It currently has 33,000 miles on it and is performing fine. I just want to service it properly, as I'm sure a rebuild would be very expensive...
Any feedback is appreciated! :-)

For pickups (non-chassis cab) the first mention is on Page 148 of the manual at 60k miles (fluid and filter) if used for police, fleet for frequent trailer towing.
I would recommend changing it regardless at 60k because there's lots of crap in there from the factory/parts wear during break-in.

I have plans to change the Transmission fluid and filter myself. Actually I have heard it has 2 filters.
Any tips/advice you would give a person who is about to do this service? Anything to watch out for?
I have performed tranny fluid and filter changes before, but not on this transmission... Thanks

I have about 52,500 miles on mine. Just picked up enough Amsoil ATF to change the transmission, transfer case, and possibly the power steering. Read an article through TDR about changing the trans fluid. The guy that wrote it felt an aftermarket pan wasn't neccessary since the temps stayed within acceptable limits with stock. I know the benefits of extra fluid, but decided to see how it goes for about 30k miles with the new fluid to see if it is really neccessary. For ease of draining, you can always get a B&M Universal drain.

I know that the deep pan dropped 5-10 deg's off my trans temps. If you haul in city traffic during hot temperature over 90 deg's, you know that you transmission will get hot. Mine would run up to 220 deg's when I was in Kansas last summer in traffic and would cool down to 150's on the interstate. The hood of the truck was so hot I couldn't open the hood without gloves.
I change my oil after the summer, each year regardless of mileage. Its excessive trans oil temps that will kill ATF fluid, not mileage.
