4wd light flashing

Pulled my trailer out of the mud yesterday and noticed the 4wd light flashed the whole time, my son said all 4 were spinning so I know it was working. Tried 4low and it would not engage. Question is why would it flash? Could the actuator have gone out in a short 54000 miles? Only used 4wd 10-12 times.

Do you put it in neutral when you shift into 4-low? Seems to help, and if not then I back up a little then put it in neutral.
After turning the **** to 4-high I always wait until the light stops flashing (unless I'm driving down the road and shifting "on the fly"). I can usually hear the solenoids engaging, kind of makes a sliding sound then a "click-click" at which point the light stops flashing. One time it didn't so I had to put it in neutral and then it worked. Shifting on the fly it sometimes takes a little while to fully engage and stop flashing.

Could the same thing happen on my '03 as well? Been fighting with it for a while now not engaging/disengaging. Sometimes it will go into 4hi but not 4lo and vice versa. Then at times it won't disengage at all until I kill the truck and unplug the connections on the t-case and plug them back in and start truck....then you can hear the actuator unlocking the case.
Could it be pulled apart and cleaned and lubed possibly or am I looking at a new actuator?
