2010 6.7L (stock)-How often do you change engine oil and filter??
Hey Guys,
I just bought a used 2010 with automatic transmission and 26,000 miles. It currently has 2,500 miles since last engine oil and filter change and the oil is VERY black. This cannot be good for internal engine parts/bearings. One dealer tells me to change the oil and filter every 7,500 mles, one dealer says change every 5,000 miles and another dealer said to change every 3,000.
My Question is:
How often do you change you oil?? (for the ones of you that have NOT done the delete kit) Thanks

When my truck had the emissions system, I changed it every 5,000 miles. The oil is going to be black as night as soon as you change it due to the EGR and re generations and there is nothing that can be done about it. Since my emission issues have gone away, my oil is clean for the first 3,000 miles. I also drain my oil when its hot and let it drain for 24 hours.

When mine was stock, I changed it every 3k-4k miles about 3 or 4 times. Then, I switched to AMSOIL and went to 7500 or 6 months (which ever came first - per the Owners Manual and AMSOIL). The Engine Oil Indicator System very rarely came on, sometimes not until after 10k miles. I drive mostly highway.
Since my exhaust fell off, I have gone about 11k miles on the oil. It still "looks" clean. I will be changing the oil soon, but before doing so, I will do an oil analysis.
I am an avid AMSOIL user and stand behind their products, so once I change the oil I plan on adding the bypass filter seeing how far I can go.
This was probably a bit more info then you were after, but keep in mind, I have seen some people suggest that the oil is condemned after only a thousand miles - probably true if using conventional oil - and due to how often your truck goes into regen.
The most important thing regardless of the type of oil you use is to monitor the oil level and don't trust the Oil Indicator System (at least I won't). The constant regens will cause the oil level to increase. The last thing you want is for it to go above the safe level on the dip stick.

"The constant regens will cause the oil level to increase. The last thing you want is for it to go above the safe level on the dip stick"---Somebody explain this to me, what causes the oil level to increase??
I noticed that my oil level is a little over full on dipstick?

When the truck goes into regen, it basically dumps some diesel during the exhaust stroke to get back to the dpf, because of this, diesel will leak past the pistons, causing the oil level to increase.
The first time I changed the oil myself (when I switched to AMSOIL) the texture of the oil felt pretty similar to diesel - this was all before I did the deletes.

^^ x2, You should probably go with the "dinger" (EVIC). Apparently the computer analyzes the oil properties and tells you when it's time. Even though the manual says every 8,000 miles (if I remember correctly). Gets expen$vie to change every 4-5k. One reason I liked my 3rd gen was the twice yearly oil changes. At $45-$55 a pop it's not trivial to be doing it 4x year on the 4th gen. My oil is runny when I change it, with diesel clearly pooling at the top of the 5gallon bucket I use to catch it. Can't be good.

7500 on bone stock truck. Oil analysis says that's too soon. But 7500 is reasonable for me.
On another note I ran the amsoil dual bypass system on my 01 and only saw marginal results with many OA before and after install. Filters were expensive, really the only benefit was ease of getting to the filters during an oil change with the twins.

I would have expected you to get good results. I ran the dual bypass on my 08 MC Hemi and oil analysis showed decent results. Oil was over a year when I traded it in for my current rig at the last minute on the way back to MT from Washington.
Hopefully you weren't paying retail for those filters!

5000 miles
I use conventional 15w-40 Kirkland oil and change it with a Fleetguard filter at 5000 miles. I don't put many miles on it. If I was on the road a lot, I would consider synthetic and let it go longer.
