The Cummins that is in our trucks is a Medium Duty industrial engine used in industrial machinery and marine applications, only the electronics are differant for the applicable intended use. The Ford and Chev engines were designed for pickups and are Light Duty Engines.

Look at most of the Frreghtliners (FL60's and FL70's) they have the same cummins engine in them... ALthough some have CAT engines also.. You can tell the CAT's by the Big Yellow oil pan. AND YES!!! my work truck (FL60) goes through lift pumps a couple a year...

i can't speak for the dmax engine, but the new ford engine was designed for medium duty application like the 7.3PSD/t444e... take a look at navistar/internationals city delievery trucks... if you see VT365 badge on it, that is the same base engine as the ford 6.0psd... ford just mucked things up by using their own programing and having it spin 4,000 rpm instead of navistars 2,600rpm. the 6.0 in navistar trim has more clutch engagement [idle speed] torque [just a few lbs though] than the 305/555 cummins does. in ford trim, you need to be careful not to stall starting out in 2nd gear [#1 on ford shifter]

Sorry folks. I didn't mean to start the medium duty, light duty discussion. What I should have said is ford sells more diesel powered 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks than DC and GM combined. Also to my knowledge the HO version of the 5.9 cummins is not available in any medium duty application.I believe the medium duty trucks get the 230HP version. So while the Ho 5.9 is a medium duty engine, there is no medium duty application for it??? Maybe when the ctd 4500 is available.???

Well here's my limited knowledge (if you call it that). The 6.0L PS that is in the ferd SD trucks is NOT a medium duty engine and is not the same as the PS motors in the bigger ferd/intnatl trucks.

NOR is the cummins in our dodges the same as any other medium duty app...it is specifically designed for our trucks. THe 5.9L in other apps while still a medium duty engine (with an longer duty cycle than our dodges I believe) is in fact different in at least a few ways if not many ways.

Same is true of the PS motors...they may be 6.0L but the bigger trucks have different HP and TQ ratings and again have a higher duty cycle...I am going with whomever said the ferds and chebbies are LIGHT duty motors (up to the 1-ton application...above that????)

And yes the duramax is used in other apps besides the chebbie light trucks...BUT again...I'll wager it;s NOT the same motor even if the same size there would be at least some subtle differences.

Feel free to correct me if I;m wrong...and please provide where you got your info from.

And as for zero US content...BS. No it wasn't MANUFACTURED in the US...BUT I bet at least some of the raw materials came right from US soil, even more from recycled products that were also dug out of the US ground.

My youngest son is a hotshotter and had the contract to haul barge pumps to the Cummins plant in Indiana, he was told at the plant that the engines that would be hooked to the pumps and used to pump out barges is the same as in his 3500.

My oldest son was a diesel mechanic for 5 years and worked on marine engines and on offshore rigs, he said the same thing, that the Cummins 5.9 used in those applications was the same as in our trucks (he drove a CTD also) except for the electronics.

That is where I got my info, first hand info from both sons.

when Nissen introduced the Titan they pounded their chest about being American made. Detroit News ran the article and had statistics that had the Titan at 88 percent made over there[across the Pacific] and the Mexican assembled Dodges as 93.7 percent made in this country. They had percents on other trucks/cars but I don't remember the exact numbers but Dodge/GM/Ford trucks were about the same. I've kicked my tail since for not printing that page.............JIM
