For you early 03' guys

Hey guys. I have a few questions. I'm looking at a truck(again, sorry to bring this up again) and I need to find out some stuff because it is a good deal(I hope).

The truck in question can be found here . The salesman I called was very knowledgable about the truck as he drives it all the time cause they are having a hard time selling it in NJ. It has 88k on it and it is an early 03'. It has the 10.5" rear and I think a 47RE. The salesman couldn't find what engine it had (SO or HO) or the tranny specifics.

Next, it had fuel problems and they put what he says is a high pressure in line pump. After they did that it still had problems so they put an in tank model in it. Now it has two pumps in a series(good or bad?) He doesn't know what the in line pump is(it may be mopar). He also said it has SOME new injectors and told me it was related to the fuel problem. All repairs were done at his dealership.

He says he himself has put 15k on the truck and loves it. Gets 18-22mpg on the highway and hasn't been a tow rig or a work truck. Interrior looks great. Says it needs new tires (not important).

Is there anybody that could run the VIN 3D7KU26603G727942 for me? Also, how would I get a truck from NJ without test driving it?

Thanks.

Interesting. KBB says 19.4 if it was in EXCELLENT condition but I think the question I have for you is WHY you would get a truck from NJ without test driving it?

If you are that interested in a truck the dealer hasn't been able to get rid of for the past 15k miles, maybe you should go see and test drive it.

Good Luck,

NEVER buy anything east of the Mississippi. Too much rust.

It does not need two fuel feed pumps, and neither one should be high pressure.

If your salesman was truly knowledgable, then he should have known that its an SO, indicated by the '6' in the 8th digit of the VIN. An HO has a 'C' for the 8th digit. If you are still serious about getting this truck, have the salesman send a digital photo of the trim label inside the glove box so you can be better informed about what this truck is.

Surely you can find something in Amarillo, Abilene, DFW or OKC. Perhaps even Hobbs or El Paso.

Not a single cab for the price I want. There are 4 in the whole US. I even went to a local dealer that looks for trucks for people and he couldn't find anything in my range.

My thinking on why he can't get rid of it is because he uses it and nobody sees it, also it is in NJ and most people there would want a diesel truck. People down here have them all over the place, just not single cab.

There is no way I would fly to NJ just to see if a truck was worth it. He looked at the glove box sticker, I just diddn't have lots of time to talk. I know the pump shouldn't be high pressure that was him trying to sound smart.

What I meant when I said "knowledgeable" is that he knows what a diesel is and at least knows what work has been done to the truck. The only question he couldn't answer was whether or not it had a 47RE or 48RE. I knew it was a SO by the 10.5" rear. Most can't answer ANY of my questions. I'm going to have my guy in town look into it. I still don't want to have him go to NJ to get it and then it be a POS and me not want it. I would be angry if I went to NJ for a customer just to get stuck with a truck nobody wants.

Is rust that bad of a problem in NJ?

Thanks

Good Luck,
I'd love to go see it but that's not possible. My point is I WOULDN'T buy a truck without taking it to the local cummins shop and test driving the crap out of it. The price is always negotiable I'm going to try for 18k or lower. It is IMPOSSIBLE to find a single cab in that price range. Most are at least 22k and up.

IMHO, "SO"? Oh no!
Fuel problems? Ehhhhh, no!
Me not test driving it? Ahhhhh, no again.
History of dealer putting 15k miles on it cause they can't dump it? Ummmm... what's the word????? No!
47RE tranny? I don't remember if that is the early one or the later one, the earlier one couldn't hold up to an HO, don't know about a SO.

Again, IMHO.

The truck is located in Newton at a used car lot. IMHO, if you can't or don't want to go look at the truck to see if its worth it, than don't buy it. I would continue looking into getting a truck that is closer to you so that you can go look at it for yourself and drive it for yourself. I believe that if you are going to spend any money on a vehicle, than you should should go look at it for yourself and than decide. If you want to arrange to have a shop look at the truck, there is a shop in Caldwell, about 30 minutes east of Newton, that is very reputable and would give you an honest opinion. The name of the shop is AutoWurks Diesel and their website is www.autowurks.com Ask for Mike or Chris. Good luck.

I have an early 03 and it has been a great truck.107k miles no major problems. I wonder when he said high pressure pump he was talking about the injection pump. With all that being said ,I would avoid that truck because of the problems not because it is an S.O. Maybe if I could put 2 or 3 hundred miles on it to try it out. It justs sounds "fishy".

If Newton was in my (lower) half of the state, I would go look at it for ya.
Since I am clear at the southern end, I can only suggest you ask one of the guys posting in the thread going on about a NJ/NY Meet & Greet. They are all pretty close by-

Funny I had to go to TX to buy all of my trucks

I agree there should not need to be 2 fuel pumps and shouldn't need to be high pressure either.

I would ask to get all of the service records since he doesn't seem to know. Have him fax them over to you.

This truck should still be under warranty right?

Sorry I dont have any info on your problems but I can give you a little advise.

It sounds like he cant sell it for a few reasons.

1. might be he's asking too much. So with that in mind unless your getting a killer deal on the price which by assuming he's had it on his lot for months it sounds like NOT.

2. multiple fuel pumps and injectors...sounds like someone doesnt know what their doing, maybe he took it to Joe Shmo mechanic.

I bought an out of state truck and I made damm sure it was exactly what I wanted, and knew everything about it before I flew to Texas and was going to drive it 2,000 miles back home.

If it was down the street would be one thing, a plane trip to see a questionable truck is another. and remember this is a Questionable Truck

I'd only do it if I knew the truck was everything I wanted and babied for like mine was.

Good Luck
