Looking at getting new tires in a 275/70/18. Was going to get the toyo's, but have read about many issues with them wearing out too quickly. Would like to get 40,000+ miles out of my next set of tires. I've got 60k on the stock rugged trails, with a little left in them. I drive to and from work in the city, long highway road trips, some towing, snow and ice in the winter, and camping (gravel, mud, etc) in the summer. Would like to hear from guys who have experience with the above tires. Thanks.

 

I have been running Toyo 285/75 17s for the last 15k. They are wearing fine, no issues so far. I do rotate them on a regualr basis, and keep an eye on the pressure.

Aftermarket tires are made of different compounds. The stock tires lasted me to 36k, and still had life left. Problem is they were too hard. I noticed a much better ride with the Toyo's.

As far as other people reporting bad wear, you have to take into account driving habits. Are they putting their foot to the floor every light, hanging corners at higher speeds, hauling heavy loads on a regular basis, waiting till the last minute to stop ? Do a search and you will see one person reports 15k and one reports 50k for the same tire.

 

Rotate rotate rotate.

Every 5,000 miles.

You should try the BFG AT in that size. I liked the looks of mine, the quietness (though they get noisy when they get down to the last 5mm of tread) and their snow handling. They suck in mud, but I think no tire will get a diesel through mud.

And I'd like a review on the skinnier BFG's

 

I put on the Nitto's last weekend and put 2k on them since. I like them thus far. Lake said it all. Rotation and air pressure is the key.

 

I don't have many miles on them yet (maybe 2k). But, I love my Hankooks so far. They're surprisingly quiet, considering the tread pattern. And, they're great in the rain (esp. compared to the OEM Mich).

 

Yeah, it's hard to tell how different people drive or maintain their tires. After reading about the hankooks they sound like really good tires. Haven't found anything bad about them. I don't care for the funky design on the sidewall though. The price looks about the same as the toyo's and nitto's.

 

Out of your choices I would say Nitto's, another option you may consider is ProComp Extreme A/T. I am running Nitto Mud Grapplers.

I am running Pro comp AT's. I like them alot. They are quiet and they were great in the snow. I also was in the mud for a short time can't really tell,, had to pull my buddies chevy 6500 2wd that was stuck pretty good. Stable under a trailer load too.

 

I was going to go with the ProComp's untill I came across a deal I could not pass for my Nitto's I have now.

I have the Goodyear pro grade a/t on my truck now with 15000 miles on them.
There are quiter, softer, with a much better ride. Good luck witch ever way you go.

 

In a previous life I managed a truck fleet for a helilogging company and initially wanted good north American brand tires, no offshore junk for me. After some experimenting we went with Toyo M55 on the Fords and M606 on the GM's due to size availability. They were decent on the highway, good on muddy or icy bush roads and the only ones to last more than 30,000 km. Those clowns were hard on equipment. The M55 did ride hard though.

 

M55's are good tires. I had m55 recaps on my last truck and they actually lasted on gravel roads. They don't chunk out like many tires. Just not what I am looking for for this truck, now.

I've only heard good things about the xtreme a/t's also. just dont offer them in the size I want.

I am leaning toward the toyo a/t's....

 

Did you get new rims? That tire specs a minimum 8.5" rim, and they measure it on a 9.5" rim. Range is 8.5" - 10".

If you have the stock rims yet, expect the centers to wear faster than the edges as a narrow rim pinches the tire. You may get a lot of squishy-ness and wiggling on the road also. I did with my BFG 305's, and those were only 65 aspect ratio.

I've never had the Destination AT. I had the Destination road tire on a van once...... Once.

Let us know how they are. Firestone is a big company and they can make some great tires.
