I know these engines can run nearly forever, but is there a certain mileage we should steer away from either based on the year or not?

My wife wanting a diesel just got even better yesterday as now she is so intrigued about how diesels run that she wants to take the two year diesel mechanics course offered at one of the colleges here. I thought that was cool...surprising, but cool. In nearly 8 years, never thought mechanics interested her.

If you go for higher mileage trucks, you'll want to consider the rest o the truck needing repairs here and there. Ujoints, ball joints, and bearing are probably one of the bigger items as far as work goes. Also this is just my marker, but over 100k, closer to 120-140k I would be aware that injectors might need attention. Some trucks had bad injectors much sooner, some much later. But it's not unreasonable to consider they might need attention around that mileage.

But really those things are pretty much in consideration throughout the life of the truck. I think you'll have to find the right amount of wear and tear for you.

We have a 2007 5.9 automatic. When not pulling our trailer it is my wifes everyday ride. She loves it!!! The heated leather seats and the adjustable pedals are features she really likes. 98000 miles so far. I suggested one day that we might get a smaller car to dirve and save fuel. Her answer was: I sure hope you enjoy driving it, because I am still gonna drive my truck.

Well, I'm nobodys wife, but I can tell you that this woman LOVES her 2006 Megalimo. I get good fuel economy considering I am driving a truck, the power is awesome, it will tow anything I've throw at it so far, and some of my tows have been right around 28K, I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I am glad to hear your wife is interested in the local college classes to learn about diesels, I too went on a learning process - it led me to quite a few interesting place, right down to now having twins, and I really LOVE them. I do all my own maintenance and have done all my mods, I have yet to do any repairs, the truck is as solid as a rock and I have not had any problems, just fun wrenching and driving.

You have to keep in mind that the 2006's and early 2007's are in high demand, everyone wants a 5.9, but they are out there and in excellent condition from what I have seen regarding those that are for sale.

I would have the dealership run a vin to check repairs/recalls/etc, run a car fax, and ask for owners records or copies of them, have a good mechanic check look it over, and then about the only looking back after that would be looking into the rear view mirror every so often as I drove it home.

That's good info! I'm not too worried about the other wear and tear items on a truck. I have the tools to replace most items, but I am definitely cautious at what we look out. I expect to have to replace quite a bit if it hadn't been done already on high mileage rigs.

The over 100k mark is the kind of info I was looking for. Mainly for the motor. I know these engines can last a 2 or 300K miles when properly taken care of. The possibility of bad injectors is pretty reasonable. I'm starting to see a pattern on diesels that the injectors seem to be the weak link?

Thanks again!

Can you blame her? Who would want to downsize. I know the feeling about wanting to get something with better fuel economy. I drive my truck to/from work (about 68 miles round trip) every day. Though I have contemplated, I just can't stand giving up my truck for "greenmobile"

That is interesting. What is different about the 2007 5.9L than previous years? I can see why they sold more than any other year...no one wanted the emissions equipment.

I love the Mega Cabs. So does my wife...but she HATES driving them, so much so, she had to drop me off somewhere and I wanted to take my truck, she had to drive it back home to let the kids unwind. She was so terrified about it, that she put the car seats back in her car. I know she can handle it since she handled my '08MC just fine...I think the diesel is what scares her.

I was quite surprised when she told me she contacted the college. Ever since then, when I had some routine maintenance to do, she has been out there with me (as always), but now I actually know why. She helped me rotate the tires on my truck earlier. Once I buy the brakes for her Aspen, she is going to do those as well.

I would run a car fax, never thought about asking the dealer to run a vin check though, good tip! Would I be better off having a Dealer Cummins Mechanic look at it or take it to a Cummins shop? Thank you!

I don't know why the injectors get such a knock everywhere. I have had 6 CTD's with over 250k on them and never had an injector issue. One of them is still down the street with a half million put on by me and a quarter million by him, and still never touched the injectors.

That's definitely good news! I wonder if it may be due to water getting in the system, causing the injectors to go bad?

I found a potential...good deal or not?

2004 QC 2500 H.O. Cummins 4x4 w/tow package, Tim-Bren air springs, new off-road tires, and a hide-a-ball goose-neck attachment. 154,000 miles. $15K/OBO. Haven't seen the truck in person, but the online pics look nice.

Thanks...I needed that laugh.

She doesn't want anything with the emissions junk on it. Neither do I, but I have my truck because I love the 2010+Mega Cabs and the creature comforts, plus since there has been a rash of exhaust and EGR thieves (kind of like the A/C thieves) I just figured mine would disappear eventually

But I bet with that 2gen you're running through LPs and IPs

Dad's 99 is on it's 3rd LP and 2nd IP in 150k which is why I poke that joke at you.

You make a good point though about injectors. I haven't had any trouble with mine. I've got 55k on the ticker. But it would be worth noting what other owners have mentioned, and the other owners on these forums have gone through injectors. Some from modified trucks, some from stock trucks. Just better to be informed than surprised.

6.7L, your wife sounds like a real hoot (especially the challenge of driving her own after driving yours and the car seat thing) Let us know how she goes on the diesel classes. I've considered it here and there but never committed. Would be great to get her perspective.

From any foreign debris really. Since the fuel pressures are very high when the fuel is delivered out of the injector hole it acts like a sandblaster on the edges of the hole. So, the better filtering you can do to the fuel the better. I've read arguments on other forums that injectors are looked at like a maintenance item. That no matter how great you filter they will still degrade and need replacing. I don't know either way, but I'm filtering and will deal with injectors if they do cause cause trouble.

Or think about nature, in a river or waterfall, the rushing water will eventually wear out rocks. Or in Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, when they get trapped on the side of the cliff when all the water comes rushing through the mining tunnels. As the water blasts out of the hole in the cliff it starts eroding the edges oft he hole and makes them bigger
