That bothered me too when I first got mine. I pulled the cat. IMO a catted Diesel smells horrible compared to a catless one.

As for the residents of Texas, I know that we have a yearly motor vehicle inspection that is mandated by the State which all vehicles operated on the roadways must pass this inspection process and display the sticker on their windshield. In the past, when I have had these inspections done, they do check to see if the vehicle is equiped with it's proper equipment that it was designed to use.

How are you guys removing the cat and getting by with the inspections if you have one in your State?

You can pull your cat, gut it, then reinstall it. Personally, if Florida had inspections I would have likely left my cat alone.

04.5 and 05, when they tried to raise the HP TQ numbers and got it a bit dirty, had to put cats on.
thought saw a post that 03 and 04 don't have any kind of Emissions control

buddies 05 smells like propane, is that what you guys are smellin?

Yeap, it definitely smells similar to propane.....

Based on your post are you saying that taking off the CAT would reduce HP and TQ?

Texas does not require emissions testing on diesel powered vehicles. They only require the safety test. If someone is requiring you to do the emissions test and making you pay more than the $12 or $13 that a safety inspection costs then they are ripping you off. Just so you know.

My truck didn't come with a cat and therefore doesn't have to have one. However, if your truck came with one then it is a federal offense to remove or tamper with it (okay...maybe not a federal offense, but still illegal).

Just the same, lots of folks leave their cat in place but remove its guts. That is still illegal, but it passes the visual inspection (if they even look at it).

Also, most folks don't know the difference between a cat and a resonator. If one were to replace their cat with a resonator then chances are they would never have a problem with inspections. I'm not advocating that because it is still illegal, but it has been done.

Good news for you. Diesels are exempt from emission testing in Texas. From the Texas Department of Public Safety's webpage:

Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from the emissions standards, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection.

The reason I think is because of emissions. They really have the trucks running lean so that they burn cleaner.

Just in case you missed it the first AND second time, diesels are exempt from emissions testing in Texas.

And by the way, my truck SMELLS like diesel.
