White side molding take-off

White side molding take-off
Winter slush and ice make keeping a truck clean in the winter really difficult. Even with regular trips to the car wash, I can't get the white side molding white again. Is it a costly, difficult job to take the white side molding off and go "smooth sided'? Is this a body shop project. I love the white body, but the side molding looks yellowish white.

If your talking about the door body molding on the sides, no it's not costly or difficult, you can take it off with some patience and elbow grease. Use some dental floss or fishing line. First, use a hair dryer and warm that thing up, or if your in a warm climate, let the sun beat down on it (main thing is to get it warm). Then start on one end and just use a slow sawing motion and work your way through that stuff. Keep it warm will help alot. It will come off. The next thing is to get some of the tape you left behind off. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get the 3M Goo-Off and apply that on the 3M adhesive and gently work it in and off. Then apply some wax or whatever you use to buff out the area. It will take some time but do-able.

I did pretty much the same thing as nonford accept I just used some regular string to "saw" through the adhesive tape and then got some 3M Adhesive & Wax Remover to clean up the glue. It's non abrasive and won't harm the paint. I can't see that anything was ever there.

Thanks for the infomation. I thought they were on with some sort of metal attachment. I know it helps protect from the doors from other cars in parking lots, but they sure are dirt collectors. Yes I am talking about the side door molding towards the bottom of doors.
Thanks again for the info. Looks like a good indoor project this weekend.

It's the same procedure used to "De-emblem" the trucks.
FYI, the primary ingredient in 3M adhesive remover is Naptha. Naptha is also sold as "LIghter Fluid", both charcoal and regular (for Zippos). The cheapest way to buy it is in the Paint department at a home improvement store, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. About $4.00 a gallon.
