What makes the 06 engine quieter than the 04.5?
I drove my brother's 06 this weekend and I swear the engine is quieter in the cab than my 04.5. His is 2wd and LB. But, that shouldn't make any difference. Is the muffler different or maybe more sound insulation under the hood? Or did they make changes in the engine to make it quieter?

My 04.5 has 41k on it and his 06 has 30k.
Yes, both trucks have 3rd injection events.
Since it's engine noise that I think I'm hearing (as opposed to exhaust), I wonder if the underhood sound insulation could be different.
Or might it have something to do with the height of the truck (2wd vs. 4wd)? Has anyone noticed hearing more engine noise after lifting their trucks?

Mine was very quite when brand new. Give it about 50,000 miles and she'll start making noise.

my 06 has ~40k.
maybe some motor noise doesn't go under the floor pan and resonate the cab, because the cat is under the passenger feet, so it gets quiet'ed down there?
it's prolly the laminated windows.
mine is REALLY quite till you roll the windows down, then you can hear it.

My last truck was an early 03 when they didn't come with the under hood insulation. I added it later, and I don't think it made much of a difference in noise...
Does his get used to pull heavier/harder than yours?
I swear both this and my last truck seem to run quieter after pulling a trailer up some significant grades.

Up. Standing in front . . . . I can't really say. He has the exhaust brake on all the time and that thing is as noisy as the engine when outside. The windows may be it. So, you're saying his windows are thicker than mine? That could explain it.

I'm with you! I resisted diesel in part for the noise... then I bought one and it is silly quiet! Still not as bad as my buddies 08 Chebbie DM... sounds like a gasser with valves that need adjusting. I had to check the badge to be sure he got a diesel!

Didn't Dodge spend a lot of time working on the NVH of the cab when they came out with the '06 cabs??? If so that would explain why the '06 is quieter in the cab than the '04.5.
