Well, that's what I did. Made me really nervous too. So far no problems. Antenna has a wing nut that lets me lower it (or remove it) and stand it up straight. I just keep it at an angle so I can get under our carport and stand it up straight when going on trips.

The Wilson K40 do come with a magnetic base if that what you need. I think you can get them at Radio Shack or other fine Electronic Places. These antenne are similiar to the one's on law enforcement vehicles and can be adjusted for SWR (Sine/Signal Wave Ratio). I know a few CB tweakers up here that would sware by them. I have seen these antennes broadcast on sideband all the way to Coast of West Virginia from here in North East Wyoming.

Here's a quick link to a K40 or K30. This site even has Fixed Base antennes.

Do a wilson 1000 or 5000 roof mount for optima recieve and out put. Just remove before car wash or pulling in the garage. Or get a shop with 12' door and you don't have to remove anything.

I have a true 1/4 wave(12 foot or so steel whip) on the back of my crossover box on a 90 degree mount with a heavy spring. On my old truck I had it on the box as it was a gull wing but this one is a full lid.

Guy I was talking with in CO with an 03 said he put a magnetic on his roof---right over the overhead display and it messed up his compass and stuff. Said he had to get it de--gaussed?? (de magnitized or something). Cost him $ at a dealer.

I put a magnetic mount on my truck. It didn't mess with the compass, BUT it scratched up the paint on the roof. I'm going to get the hood mounts now.

Saran wrap is fine under my 3-mag mount. Better, IMO, is a layer of No-Alox
(H-Depot). No rust and I just wipe it off after a trip. However, I just get tired of how it looks. (Rust ring? Who's gonna see it? I'm 6'2" and don't see the roof of my stock 2WD.)
I too have a topper. Going to try the Firestik fender mount with my space cadet Signal Engineering antenna. If not, then a mag mount Wilson.
