You can use DOT 4. That's what I'm using.

When I researched brake fluid types, I found Dot 4 can withstand higher temps, but needs to be replaced sooner than Dot 3
I had Dodge flush mine, they probably used the Dot 3.
Either one is fine, I'm sure.

Nice reply. Hope you don't have a question you would like answered in the future. I'm a bit confused also. I've been told DOT 4 is fine to use and mix with DOT 3, as I've been told it is backwards compatable. I've also been told to not mix the two.....which is it?

There are 3 types of brake fluid generally available - DoT3, DoT4, and DoT5.

3 and 4 are glycol base. 4 has a higher boiling point. Both are hydrphyllic, meaning that they attract water and mix it with the brake fluid - that's a good thing. They eat paint pretty fast. They are compatible with each other. If you do a lot of mountain towing, I would use 4. Otherwise, 3 is just fine.

5 is a synthetic. It has a higher boiling point than 4. It is absolutly NOT compatible with anything that's glycol based - it will clot. It will not eat paint. It is hydrophobic, it will not absorb water - and that's a bad thing. When water gets into the system - and it will - the water pools. When the water gets to the caliper, it will boil and turn to steam. Then you lose your brakes when you really need them. There is no reason to use synthetic fluid in a street vehicle.

There's another fluid that's available, but very hard to find. DoT5.1 is a glycol based fluid with the same charectoristics as 5. I get mine from Summit.

Any GL-5 Rated Synthetic 75w90 gear oil is good. I have had good luck with Mobil 1 from the Vato-Zone.
