batteries don't even technically need to be disconnected if your not from the cab area forward just keep your ground really close. On that note I built a replacement front bumper for my chevy 3/4 ton p/u when I was in hs and we never once unhooked the battery cables and it never hurt a thing. Course there wern't quite as many comps on that truck either. Radio and heater, and efi system pretty basic

No need to disconnect batteries....the most important issue is that you keep your ground right next to where you are welding...
Not only does that eliminate the need to disconnect the batteries, but it also makes welding underneath your truck safer..

DO DISCONNECT the batteries , I have replaced ECM on trucks that have had welding done on them by company installing components such as utility boxes and forget to disconnect and fried the ECM , better to be safe than sorry , and yes always try to place the ground as close to the work as possible.
