Voltage gauge dead?.?.?

On the way back from my lunch break this afternoon I was driving along at around 45-50mph, unplugged my cell phone to check voicemails and as soon as I disconnect the phone the gauge cluster chimes at me and says "Check Gages" so I look around and everything is normal except my voltage gage. I was only about 3-4 miles from the shop so I get back, turn the truck off and then cranked it back up. Fired right up with no hesitation. I’m guessing that the alternator took a sh*t?.? What are ya'lls thoughts?

BTW: 2004 2500 w/60K miles.

Well, on the way home the gage was working fine. I stopped my autozone on the way home to have them load test the batteries and check out the alternator and everything checked out fine... Any suggestions?

The guage is still dead at this point? According to Autozone, the alt and batteries are good, just the guage isn't reading right?

No. I'll summarize it and hopefully make it a little clearer.

--Gage died on the way back from lunch.

--Pull up at the shop (gage still dead) and shut it down.

--Immediately cranked it back up and gage was still dead.

--Leave 3+ hours later crank up the truck and everything appears normal.

--Stop by Autozone on the way home, they hook up & test the Alt. and batteries and everything checks out fine.

--At this point everything appears normal on the cluster.

Now I'm left trying to figure out what's going on. Did the alt. temp. take a sh*t and is functioning now for the time being or something else?

Buy a cheap voltmeter and keep it in the truck. Check the voltage when it does it again. In the mean time, double check all the connections on the alt, and at the batteries.

+1

Keep a volt meter handy and if it happens again, leave it running and pop the hood to check it out. May just be a faulty guage for some reason.
