Turn on AC, it doesnt smell to good

I have 900 miles on my 2005 2500. Any reason when I turn on the AC, it smells musty................like dirty socks hahahaha

Do I need to check something? It seems to go away after driving for a bit.
Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

The smell you are describing is coming from your vent system, when you run your a/c is it in recirculation mode you need to turn your a/c button off and switch the *** on the a/c panel back to fresh air mode, let the air blow through the vents about a couple of minutes before you shut down your truck, this will let the moisture disapate from your vent system. This should clear up that musty smell.

There is a spray called Ozium that works pretty good for covering the odor. With the a/c on recirc shoot a little spray down by where your passengers feet would be (lower dash, you get the picture..) and the hvac will pull it in. I also agree with IAG, running on recirc alot will cause odors.

I saw some stuff on two guys garage that you can get. It is an upsidedown foamy type spray that you shoot directly up the vent tube (or whatever, the one that drips everywhere). Let it sit for like ten minutes, then run the AC on MAX for a while. Sounded like a great idea to me, the wifes car will make you , shes a smoker and it's quite sick when you first turn it on.

By the way, I'm That Guy who won't let anyone even think about lighting up in my truck. Eating and/or drinking, ......maybe on a long trip.

Interesting. My truck has the same smell. I thought it was just me.

My A/C stays in recirc all the time.

Quit farting.

Ozium, fresh air into AC system, all the above works. When I shut mine down (rather, when my wife shuts it down) I usually leave it on fresh air instead of recirc so it pumps dry air inside.

Does that still work if the outside humidity is high? Sometimes I think pumping in fresh air would be about like pumping in water.

I live in AZ, so the air is always dry.

I dunno the answer, try it and see.

If the interior of the cab is too hot for "fresh" AC to cool, the truck automatically turns on "recirc", no matter which you have selected(in the manual). If the exterior humidity is high, running "fresh" is a bad idea as your cab humidity will remain high and the unit is more likely to freeze up with condensation. Switching to "fresh" for the last few minutes gets rid of moisture in your system and prevents mildew from growing, which is what stinks at next startup.

Just turn the A/c know off and put into "outside air" about a mile or two before you get home. Gives time for fresh air to circ thru the vents. You can also spray "Lysol" down the outside vents by the windshield. I have had the same smell on a F-150 develop. My wifes Hyundai Santa Fe is starting too at 20k miles...It's this blazing heat and humidity in Texas!

my vent system doesn't smell at all really, but you can really smell it when you use the windshield washers. that stuff stinks. i don't know if there is something growing in the piping or it is the fluid in the resovoir... [i've only gone through maybe 2 gallon since new, so there would still be some oem stuff in the mix]

The windshield washer nozzles spray directly over the outside air intake vents below the winshield..Yes, the stuff use to burn the heck out of my eyes too. Had to learn to turn the fan off when using the ww.
