Tread depth...how much difference does 4/32" make?

I had a low tire over the weekend,I took the tire to the local tire shop and they said it wasn't repairable. They replaced it under their road hazard warranty.

The new tire has 17/32" of tread and the other tire (on the front axle) has 13/32".

The shop manager said 4/32" wouldn't hurt anything, but if it was any more they'd replace the other tires since its a 4x4.

I'm not too concerned about the diference on the front axle, but am concerned about the rear axle with a LSD. What happens when I rotate the tires to the rear? I don't want to screw up the diff.

Do I need to have an "accident" with the other front tire and have it replaced also?

I'm considering just leaving the tires where they are and not rotating them anymore. As it is,these Nitto POS won't make it to 20K miles. More like 16-18K at the rate they're wearing.

It will not make much difference for the size of tires on your truck. If your tires working radius is 16 on the old tire, it will be 16.125 on the new one.

You may want to move that tire to the rear (I think the passenger side takes most of the initial torque when starting forward) and use a three tire rotation until they are all even. Shouldn't take too long.

Hi,
Can anyone confirm this method of putting newer tire on passenger rear? I am going to have my brand new spare rotated in today with my OEM wheels and like this idea.
I have to say my current driver rear looks worse than my pass rear, but i started out with worn tires and didn't pay much attention.
Thanks,
