towing/cooling fan
when should my cooling fan kick into high gear while towing?
i had the dealer check it out as i hadn't heard it kick into high gear latley
and the truck has been running warmer
not overheating by any means but warmer like 210-215
the told me my electroviscous clutch was bad and rplaced it and a couple of other relays etc. that make this fancy fan work
towed with it agian this weekend and still didn't hear it kick in
so again, at what temp should it kick in?

Rockhound. I do a bit of towing both heavy and light, year round within a 1,500 mile radius from SE PA in all kinds of weather and my fan has only kicked in once in 245k miles. Scared the crap out of me!! Now I do have a bad relay or sensor which keeps kicking a "slow fan speed" code but the truck never runs hot - approx 200 deg. I was told as long as the engine doesn't get too hot or go to far over 200 deg. - don't worry. Besides when that monster fan kicks in it must suck down ALOT of horsepower!!

I have a buddy of mine who's got a 2000 and he is having a problem of it kicking on too he has replaced his fan clutch twice and the tstat once and his truck if you put any sort of a load on in the trailer it will be over heating in matter of time pulling a hill Only thing short of tearing all the after cooler and the ac and the radiator out and cleaning every one of them i am at my wits end on trying to figure it out cause it don't do it obviously when its empty cause the clutch never has a chance to come on

Turn on the AC and see if you hear the fan come on when you first take off from a long light. Just make sure you take off slow one time then try taking off fast. And as long as it doesn't get over 215 before it kicks in then don't worry about it as much.
