Tie rod ends

Today I took the truck in for alignment they called me and said they could not align due to the fact the tie rod ends have play. 40k on the rig. Their recommendation is to upgrade the sterring components, ie. pitman arm, steering gear&damper. estimated cost $900.00. I don't know anything about front ends, but why can't I just replace the tie rod ends? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The shop is probably slow. They need work.

You can replace the tie rod ends, and I'd look to be sure no wrench has touched them yet. Who knows, they may have taken your good ends off and put some worn ones on to get the work they need. I don't trust anyone. Ever see those expose' shows where they hide a camera under a car's hood, frame, inside the trunk etc and drive it around getting service done? 70% of the places they go try to rip them off.
