My dad has an 06 and 08 both lifted with 35" tires and no performance mods. I hate how the power comes in on the 06 it's very unresponsive and sluggish in my opinion. The 08 is a totally different story it's very responsive from a dead stop up to about 50-55mpg.

My early (10-02) 03 still has a good steel alt bracket. If it ever cracks I will weld and reinforce it - that's the least of my worries. I also have zero door seal wind noise or any of the rumored early 03 vibrations. It is a solid truck. It was lethargic running, stock, but a turbo really woke it up and 4" turbo-back cooled it down. Then tuning made my FILs 6.7 look like a sick dog! It's nice to open the hood and see the trans and a lot of my garage floor past both sides of the engine and even nicer to work on. Craig

Best year
I had an 04 quad short box auto 4x4 that was great.
Util I fell asleep in it at 80 mph
I got an 2010 2500 crew gasser 4x4 that lasted a year 8 sold and found an 06 diesel auto 4x4 long bed it is better for towing and rides better on chopped up roads
But the 04 short with high out put 5.9 was the cats ***

I love my '05 with 90K. But I did lose the the second gear band at 60,000, and the plastic intercooler a week ago. I figure the tranny was my fault for towing w/ 35's and 3.73's, plus romping on it with the box turned up. The intercooler I should have proactively replaced, but there's really no excuse for Dodge putting those pieces of junk in there in the first place.

Ive had a 98 12 valve, 00 24 valve, 06 common rail and i am presently the owner of an early 04. Early 04 is by far my favorite. mostly because the 00 and the 06 were autos. 98 was a 5 spd. 04 is a 6spd. love the 6spd. The 04 has the comfort of the newer trucks and the milage of the 98.

80,000 miles on my 07 5.9 DRW Megacab, does the job for me.Great truck,no big problems so far but i did have to do u-joints.While it was apart i had Carli ball joints put in/hubs/08 steering upgrades etc. Carli leveling kit will go on soon and besides all the extra i have put into it i hope it last 15 more years---that is the plan.------if not i have the 01 in my sig in the garage with 41,000 original miles to fall back on.Ps the bro-law has had good luck with his 03 DRW too.CHEERS DW

I'm going to vote for the '03 as well. I had. 98.5 24 valve before this one that I beat into the ground. That truck turned me onto dodge/cummins so I bought another.
Picked up this one at 98k and have 240k on it now. I have been tempted a few times to trade it in, but I just can't bring myself to do it.
Putting a south bend OFE this weekend, then I think I'll upgrade to the smarty and keep the truck around a while. In fact, rather then trading in, I've been keeping my eyes open for another 03 engine to rebuild (and upgrade) and keep ones standby for once..... Or IF.... This one decides to go.
Fuel mileage is great! People are always surprised when I show them what I get. He a buddy want me to help him haul a 68 c10 down from 150 miles away last weekend. He said he would tow it with his jeep and a u-haul. I laughed at him and said ill drive.
He couldn't believe after almost 200 miles with the truck on the back, I only used 1/4 tank.
With the $$$ I'm saving from not financing a new truck, I sink into this one for upgrades and replacing (even if it doesn't NEED replaces, just faded) body parts here and there. Seat covers, headlight lens, grill. Whatever can't be pollished up to looking new after +200k.

I sold the 2wd '03 back in October and bought another 03 but this was a 2500 4x4 auto. Been a pretty good truck. Just don't like the auto trans. Fast forward to now, I managed to buy a 07 3500 6spd CHEAP, so I did my first delete and love it so far. I need to drive it more to see what I really think.
