Taking a bath

I have always had 4x4's and my 0-3 is a 2x4. Today I couldn't get up a customers driveway and was not real happy.

I am considering trading on another 03, same truck just a 4x4. But, I know I'll probably take a bath on it. Any ideas out there as far as how bad it can be. I know a lot of guys have bought and traded their 03's on another.

Just soliciting feedback.

Thanks

I would have no idea. Depends on how long you've had it and how many miles.

Do you have limited slip? Was the driveway muddy? Mine has done pretty well, I had to launch a 3500 lb boat in the sand and did OK. The LSD works better on this one than my '01, but this one's more nose-heavy.

Yep, $4 to $6K is about what I would expect. Not even worth asking the question of the dealer. It would be workable if I knew I could do it for a grand. But the loss is toooooo great.

Re:Taking a bath

I have to admit I also have a 4x2 and have considered doing the same thing but I really cannot afford the loss. I have plans on going on some sort of mini-expedition with my truck, to where I really don't know yet but anticipate 4x4 being a necessity.

I also have considered trading "down" to a 2002 4x4, Crew Cab instead of a 2003. I really love my truck so I'm not sure what I'll end up doing!

Re:Taking a bath

try a locker/limited slip in the rear if u dont already have one. cheaper than the loss u will take. i knwo you have that red mud down there that can get pretty slick. off road tires can also help a 4x2

Re:Taking a bath

I would check into more agressive tires first. Would hurt to lose 6k that quickly.

More weight in the bed helps too. I had a '75 Dodge that couldn't pull itself up anything when empty. Loaded with a bunch of fence posts, though, and it was unstoppable (at least as unstoppable as a 2wd can be).

Re:Taking a bath

Mine is a 2x4, always had 4x4 or AWD, been stuck twice. Mine came with all season tires, plus I was "lerning" what it would do, not much was the answer. I'm putting on Bridgestone's blizzaks for the winter, supposed to be better than studded tires. I do love the ride and independent front wheel suspension. I did have the foresight to get the tow hooks. I was stuck at home so the wife and tractor were very handy.
Mine is for road travel any way, my work covers a 20 county area from office to office and I just got a 5th wheel this summer as well. I'm happy, hope I've learned what it will do.

Re:Taking a bath

You are right you will be taking a bath. All you can do if you need to, is check as many dealers and privite partys as you can and decide if it is worth it. I know this does not help much but that is all you can do.

Re:Taking a bath

I managed to do this with my 2001 2wd without getting stuck Turning around was a bit tricky but I made it. I towed snowmobiles into the mountains 4 times last winter through the snow and only chained up once. That time is was slushy with compact snow beneath. The steepest grade was about 8% and I always went in 3 & 4th gears. I learned to drive by my boost gauge. I would find where the tires would break loose then run just under that. Generally I could run 6-7 lbs in 4th and 4-5 lbs in 3rd gear before losing traction. This was with BFG A/T tires that had 30,000 miles on them. I always looked a little out of place in the parking lot with nothing but 4x4s around and this little blue lowrider job :
