Suspension Recall
Anyone else receive a notice from DC that the front springs on their 3500 are too soft, and may allow bottoming out? I got mine two weeks ago. Since then, I have been trying to find someone to do the recall. Two nearby shops say they would love the work, but they just can't handle the 3500 springs, they're too heavy.

This is for 4 x 2 trucks only right? Not 4x4 trucks, right?
R U saying your dealer can't do it? That seems kinda ridiculous.
They can't weigh more than about 60lbs each can they?

i change out the springs on the loco's journal boxes when they are broken. the GE springs are a little heavy [over 150lbs i believe] and the crane gets used for that, but on the older gm units [gp38/39/sd40/50/60] you can move the springs around with no real problem [in the ±100lbs range]

Maybe by heavy they mean they don't have a spring compressor that can compress them enough to get them in (or get the old ones out). The only other way to do it would be to drop the axle.

They had heavy enough labor at the last shop, there was one guy there that looked like he could compress them with his bare hands One of those guys you'd hate to feed
ASHNBAK, were you pulling anything on your trip to Oregon?
This weekend is my first big trip pulling the trailer, going to South Carolina. It's the one where I have to take it easy, since I haven't put 500 miles of towing on it yet (Heck, I haven't even put 900 miles total on it yet), and they recommend staying below 50 mph. How do you do that? I'll have to stay in 5th. I had it out last weekend and took it across the CAT scales. The combination weighed in at 17,760# empty, no fuel. By the time I'm packed and fueled, I estimate I'll be close to 19,000#. Shouldn't take too long to break it in that way.

According to the letter I got, it says
"... we recommend that owners of some 2005 model year Dodge Ram 3500 4X2 Pick Up trucks have the following service performed."
"The problem is... Incorrect front coils springs may have been installed on your truck (VIN:XXXXXXX). This may cause the front suspension to bottom out prematurely, which can reduce ride quality."

I always was told that the 3500 and 2500 front springs were the same. If so, why only the recall on 3500?
I still think my springs are weak and I have bottomed out the suspension on occasion.

springs
had the recall done, springs are not heavy, can pick up with one hand, no compressor needed, the tech put a stand under the frame, put a floor jack under the lower control arm, reamoved the nut on the upper arm, slowly lowered the jack a little, smacked the upper arm to relese the ball joint, and just let the jack down slowly, lifted the spring out, put it back together in revurse order, made it look easy.
