I seriously contemplated stopping off at the muffler shop the day I brought her home to exchange mufflers (no straights for me); but as said above, I love it the way it is.

Re:straight piped
go to diesel dynamics's website and download their two 4" and 5" exhaust system videos. they sound horrible in my opinion. the 5" isn't as bad as the 4". i don't say this to be against diesel dynamics0 they have excelleny products, but against the news cummins itself. to each his or her own!

Hunter, I see your 's, but I get the feeling you really think us < 03 guys are standing around, fuming when a mellow, discreet, and dare I say demure 03 drives by . Yet, I probably speak for the majority of us when I say that's probably farthest from the truth. Yep, ours are obnoxiously loud, and clackety, but personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. I've read several reviews on the web that consider the 02's Dodge Cummins the end of the "real" truck, and I feel fortunate to own one. Granted, there are fella's out there who have been waiting for the new quiet engine, and if that does it for them, like maybe yourself, then great. But, don't pity us. Ten years from now, the 12 valve and ISB Cummins' will be the equivalent of a 60's big block; searched for and coveted. Rather it's I who chuckles now when an 03 pulls into a fueling bay.

To each his own ;D
I'll tell ya what is really errie,,, a couple of weeks ago when my folks went camping up in the montains with us, I couldn't help pullin out to pass Dad going up the grade of Afton Mtn. I told him to roll down his window as I came by so he could hear a real truck. Dad & Mom have a V-10 Ram and pull almost the same Cougar 5er as we do. Ours is about 900lbs heavier with the doulble slides.
Anyhow, a few days later, Dad and I took his truck down to visit the Harley shop in Orange. Talk about QUIET,,,, If you turn the radio off and don't breath,,,, you can almost hear the transmission hum. That thing makes you think it's got an electric motor under the hood! He loves it and it does have quite a bit of power,,,,,, Just kinda scary when you can't hear it. ;D
However, I did get him makin comments about maybe,,, just maybe,, looking at the new quiet Cummins when he decides to get another truck. ;D

RATTLINRAM,

I too found the V-10 very strong, quiet and a good engine. Loves gas, but sure was a lot cheaper to buy it. Just have to push it too hard on the long climbs with much weight on it. It will do it, but don't like pushing those RPM's up that high. So, I just took it easy - - and slow. Like the mileage on this new one MUUUUUCCCCCHHHHHH better. 8)

Bob

Re:straight piped
I was going to say I heard a 03 truck at the Monroe dyno day that had DD2's, a 4" exhaust with straight through muffler and I thought it sounded pretty good. I am biased being an 03 owner but the first and second gen owners for the most part thought it sounded like a proper Cummins also. I think part of the sound thing comes from the fact that a fair number of the older gen truck owners have only heard the new one at idle at stoplights and such where I agree it sounds like something is missing. Remember that as you run up the RPM's the main cumbustion event gets much closer to the pre-combustion fire and all that marvelous cummins sound comes out of the closet.
