Steering wheel controls and Kenwood radio/nav

Is the TIPM reflash needed if you are installing the steering wheel controls along with an aftermarket radio/nav. I have read a lot of the info on the net about installing the SWC's but in most cases they were using it to operate a factory radio. I thought it may be possible to connect the SWC output direct to the radio through one of the aftermarket control boxes, i.e. PAC SWI-JACK. Anyone done this?

Thanks!
