Steering wheel coming apart -- is it a warranty item

I need to snap a picture for you and I'll try to get this tonight.

At the 12 O'clock position on my steering wheel, there is a spot forming. It is maybe about half inch across, about quarter of inch tall, about 16th of an inch deep at this point. This is where I hold the wheel the most, and it is getting worse each time I drive. If I rub it with my hand or thumb, a skin layer rubs off easily. Don't know how it started. Truck only has 19,000 miles on it, garage kept at home and work.

Is this kind of thing a warranty item?

Most likely considered a wear and tear item but they may recommend you cut your finger nails.

Mine started when the alignment was out. Drove it like that for awhile. Guess it was from fighting it caused the friction.

They wouldn't warranty it and wanted something outragous for a new one. If I ever run across a nice one in a junk yard I'll buy it or just get a cover if it gets worse.

Mine has started to peel all over.
I'd like to get a nice wood grain one if I could find it.

Replacing the steering wheel will be a pain because of the air bag won't it?

Mine has the same thing. I think my wedding ring is what caused it. The air bag shouldnt be that big of a deal. They are prteey standard now days. It should have a plug that goes into the colum that it gets its info from.

It`s a fairly common problem , mine did the same thing about a year after I bought the truck brand new...I was told it was a wearable item and NOT covered under warranty. I bought a new one through work , and had our local mech. shop install it for me , cost me around $150 if I remember right. I have heard of others getting it covered under warranty , guess it depends on the dealer , and how loud you gripe

The replacement one is starting to do the same thing , but it`s lasted around 4 years now , instead of one...the ironic thing is , the steering wheel on my `96 Nissan king cab truck is still in PERFECT shape

I hear ya. I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra that has seen a lot of abuse, steering wheel is still perfect.

I hate steering wheel covers, so I don't know what I'll end up doing.
