Steering column rattle (bang)

I developed a steering column rattle (more like a bang) that only does it when the steering wheel is turned and the tire hits a bump, not in a straight line or on a smooth road while turning. Seems like a heavy metal to metal contact. I check the steering shaft and it's tight and my only guess it's something inside the steering column itself. Also checked the shock mounts. If I lower the tire air pressure down to around 45psi it's somewhat muted, but up around 60psi + it's pretty annoying. Anyone ran across this problem?
