Squeeking noise from 4X4 shifter - How to STOP!

I've got this annoying squeeking noise coming from the 4X4 shifter. It sounds like it is the pleather boot rubbing on something. If I hold shifter and put some tension on it, most of the noise vanishes. Any others out have or have solved this problem?

Thanks!!

I had it on mine but has since mysteriously dissapeared but I must admit that it was quite annoying. I think after I sprayed it down with some armor all type protectant it stopped making the noise.

Hmm, maybe the electronic shift on the fly isn't so bad after all. Haven't heard a single problem about IT yet.

I get a squeak from the boot around the stick on my tranny. Rubbing a candle on the stick helped for awhile but it came back. I'll try a wrap of some Teflon tape (not the plumbing tape) that I have next.

Here you go, Take the boot off, it unsnaps from the console, pull it up to give you a look into the hole it covers. Remove the 2 torx screws from the trunnion holding the shifter in place. Remove the plastic block the screws are in, this holds the shifter down but leave the shifter in place. On the side of that block that touches the shifter is a raised area, sand it down flush with the rest of the block, this gives the shifter more room and kills the squeek. Been squeek free for 8k miles now.

good luck

Squeek or no squeek...I would still order my truck with the manual shifter.

I had the squeek. I shifted it into 4X4 on dry gravel for a couple of miles. Squeek was gone! (Lubrication??) I haven't had it back, and that was about 1000K ago.

I wedge a pack of smokes in there when I get it. Seems like anything at all kills the squeek, I just put 'em in where they won't come out, don't smash 'em or anything. Sorta comes and goes.
