Re:Speakers

Guy's forget about Kenwood & JVC Decks, don't get me wrong they are not bad there is just better out there for the money i'd personally go with Eclipse, Clarion, or Pioneer, I don't really care for sony at all, but you can get the Clarion DXZ 635MP Quality radio for 150 on ebay, & if you look at the features & quality they are comparable to the high end radio's like Eclipse which can be bought off ebay for around $350.

RamDan,
Did you have the Infinity speaker set up before replacing the front speakers ?
I have this option and have been a bit disappointed in the mid-high range sound quality at moderate volume levels. Getting used to it - Would have hoped to have had better quality when playing CD's.
thanks....

Nope, I had the basic 4 speaker setup. The mids and highs were non-existent with my factory speakers. The factory speakers are pathetic looking....they are just a basic paper cone speaker with a whizzer cone tweeter. I'm not sure if the Infinitys are the same though. But, from what you are saying, i'm glad I didn't get charged extra for the Infinity setup, because I probably would have wound up replacing that too

True. It all depends what kind of setup you are going for. Personally I have almost exclusively used JVC and had zero problems. I'm not building a competition quality sound system for my truck, but if I was, I'd get a head unit with more features like an Alpine or Eclipse. IMHO, the quality control on Pioneer and Clarion decks have been a little sketchy in the past, however their newer models seem to be great! But no matter what, everyone is going to have their own brand preference.

Re:Speakers

I have a set of MB Quart 6.5" sperates going into my front doors. I made an adapter plate for them.
I might have to make it a bit thicker for the 'throw' of these lil drivers. ;D

Now heres another mental idea that attacked my brain... :

I am going to build an MDF enclosure for my 12" sub, then mount it inside a weatherproof box and mount it ported thru the floor under the drivers side rear seat. I saw something similar and I like the idea with this truck...4x4 and nice clearance.

I have a lot of surgery ahead for this project.

;D

That sounds like an excellent idea. I hate the idea of losing the flat load floor and the rear storage bins. It seems like there would be plenty of room to build an MDF enclosure like you are talking about. You might even be able to get a body shop to weld a "belly" underneath. The only thing I can think of is that you would have to relocate the factory jack and lug wrench because they are under the seat.

Re:Speakers

A buddy of mine does some awesome stainless work and is going to build the belly.

Build the belly...

More steak

I thought my jack was at the passenger front seat.

Re:Speakers

You guys seen this site yet?

http://proboxrocks.com/

They have a speaker enclosure for the Dodge Rams
that goes under the rear seat. Looks like it accepts
two 10-inch subs...

Not sure how much it costs but looks interesting....

Yeah they are pretty popular. The only disadvantage is that you lose the storage bins and the flat loading floor of your truck is equipped with it.

Re:Speakers

First of all I've had almost every type of deck mentioned and various 'systems' in my past vehicles. I fully agree to avoid pioneer and kenwood, and would add sony to avoid, unless budget prohibits buying good stuff. Stick with Alpine or Eclipse. I prefer Alpine, I've had several with zero problems and great sound/ergonomics.

JL audio makes a stealthbox that fits under the back seat and is completely invisible. It holds one 10" sub, and only takes up one side of the underseat storage, which doesn't really hold that much anyway. JL audio is top notch when it comes to subs and I've had one of their stealthboxes and they sound awesome. Most premade boxes sound like crap, as do bass tubes - AVOID BASS TUBES they suck.

As for front/rear speaker replacements, as some have mentioned, most aftermarket 6x9's dont fit the front doors, but plenty of 6.5's do... You won't notice much difference between the two sizes.

If you do any of these changes, you'll need amps and crossovers (unless the amps have xovers built in). Whatever those head units are rated at from the factory is likely peak, most put out 5-7 watts per channel RMS. Even the ratings for RMS on the aftermarket head units are really pretty optimistic in my experience. If you want to get great sound, you'll need an amp for your 'highs' and an amp for your subs... Again, in my experience, it's not a good idea to half-a$$ it with stereo systems...

Re:Speakers

those proboxrox boxes look nice, but take up the whole underseat storage. At that point, where do you mount/conceal your amplifier(s)??
