This clunk has been present for a long time. It's just that you "quiet" diesel guys can here it better than us "regular" diesel guys can. Been that way for a long time.

I was told a long time ago that the clunk is not actually from the compressor. It is the sudden load snaps the tension adjuster and makes the clunk when the belt overcomes the spring pressure.

My Chevy did the same thing. I was told that the oil settles in the compressor and that is what causes the noise. My '03 makes the noise if it sits for a few days. Currently the onlt issue I have with it is when I get into traffic or stopped at a light the air coming out will go from 40 deg to 60 deg. The dealer keeps telling me that Chrysler is aware of the problem and they are waitting for a fix.

I get the clunk when I turn on my a/c in my 03...definately sounds like it is coming from the compressor area.

Mine does it too, definitely up under the hood somewhere. I'm on my second compressor, drier, lines, condensor, etc because the first one blew chunks into the system with about 2000 miles on it. Had only been using the AC for about a week, and it gave up the ghost last summer.

55000 mi on my '03 and the clunk has tamed down some [no longer a loud bang]. My dealer has a service advisory from Dodge that the noise is normal sound from a door being closed. I talked to their A/C mech and we cycled the A/C switch with each one of us standing beside the truck with the hood up. The clunk was not coming from the compressor but back in the dash area. There was no compressor belt "whip" when engaging A/C switch. When this truck was new the first time I heard/felt it I thought we had a blowout.

Maybe when first started the rpm's are higher and cause the compressor clutch to slam into engagement. That would explain why driving a few miles and letting the idle speed drop would reduce noise. JMHO
