soot on bumper --> clogged CAT?

I don't know guys.... I had two TA's, an 84 and an 87, and both of their CATS got clogged. One got cleaned out, the other replaced (which was not cheap). I really worry that all of that black **** that you can see in the exhaust tip is going to clog up the CAT fast. What are your thoughts?

If mine ever clogs its gone for good. I balive there is a lifetime warenty on emisions related items but I am not sure abought that. Either way around I dont like having one and if I suspect its pluged, it will be missing in a hury.

Cats are covered under the Federal Emissions Warrant which is 5yrs/50,000 miles. I would not worry to much about it clogging your cat if your running it good and hot every so often. That should burn out most of the build up in there. I have yet to see a bad cat on any of these gen III trucks.

travist,

how restrictive are these cats? I believe that I read somewhere that some cummins engineer said that there was no logic in removing or replacing the OEM cat with some "high flow" aftermarket cat since they really don't restrict exhaust all that much. I believe that he said the muffler was a different matter, though.

Actually, the warranty on EPA mandated emission controls is 8 yr/80,000 mi.

yes...

normal...

when the cat gets clogged up, you will feel a very definate power loss... like driving with an exhaust brake on...

My 98 12V is one with the cat. I had it off a while back while working on the pipes. Looked through it and could still see very little blockage. Truck has 164000 miles on it. After that experience, I don't see the cat clogging unless something goes wrong.

I did run without it for a day or two, but no SOTP feelings changed. If I start adding some goodies, maybe that might be different.
