smoked ball joints?
So i've been noticing a clunking sound in the front end that has gotten real bad recently. Finally got under the truck today to check it out and i think i found the problem. I can grab the hub (lots of leverage with the dynatracks that stick way out) and move it up and down 1/16in or more with just one hand, and it clunks!
Upper (pin stlye) seems failry tight side to side, so is it the lowers that are smoked or what, allowing all the vertical slop? Had it aligned not to long ago and they said BJ's were still doing all right. Should i be worried about driving it?
Thanks, Ryan

up and down-ball joint play. side to side- tie rods. i am on my second set of moog upper ball joints. the first set only lasted 20,000 miles! moog warrantied them, though. 1/16th of play is not that much. within dodge factory specs. i had almost 1/2 an inch play when i replaced my last moogs. the lowers generally out last the uppers on our trucks too.
the clunking sound-when does it happen?? when turning?? going over bumps??

yah i just checked and dodge does have some fairly loose tolerances on ball joints, interesting. So i ended up checking both sides again and drivers side i can move the knuckle up and down by hand easy a 1/16 inch or more and it clunks. Side to side is ok. Even though it is within spec seems very easy to get it to move up and down. Passengers side i have to pry on the lower and get minimal movement. Upper i can just push on the top of the tire and get 1/16 in or less side to side. I have been looking at those Carlis since they came out wishing the had the lowers to go with...and were less than $500...
It clunks when i hit bumps or pot holes, kind of jarring motions. Seemed to be coming from the drivers side and i can feel it slightly in the floor. First thought was track bar bolts were loose so i tightened them up a little today but they were pretty tight. Also checked shock bolts and all is good.
Thanks, Ryan
