Show your Radar/Laser Detectors/Jammers/Shifters

Who has them? What do you have? How do you like it?

I've had Whistler detectors over the years and they've always performed well. I recently bought a Valentine One, and while it does work great, I didn't notice that much of a difference as far as the radar compared to the Whistler while I had both of them hooked up in the truck. To be honest though, I never had both on where I had a chance to test/compare their long range performance.

I also got the direct/hard wire kit and concealed display for the V1, which were easy to install and have worked out great. No more dangling cords to look at and mess with.

I installed the concealed display on top of the steering column, where it's easy to see at a glance. And the V1 is mounted high up on the windshield next to the mirror on the passenger side, for a clear line of sight front and back. With the concealed display hooked up, the V1 has no visible display so it looks like it's off and is actually hard to see from the rear. I also really like the directional locator with the V1, and it seems to be pretty accurate.

Just some FYI: I have stopped people with all brands, makes, and models of these.

Most cops do not have their radar running the entire shift. Yes, it is powered on but the radar or laser is not active.

By the time your detector picks up my signal, I already have a speed readout.

Also, laser is very hard to beat. Imagine a laser beam....now, I can shoot this laser beam on any part of your vehicle to get a speed readout. Unless I shoot within 12" of your detector with the beam, you will never know it.

Slow down, save your money, or be ready to donate to the PDs general fund.......

That is true, but most if not all rely on you shooting someone else way ahead of you and they pick up that signal.

I use a Valentine One. I really like it. It not only shows signal strength but gives you a direction to look for, ( front, back or side). All of this brand is upgradeable too. You send in the unit and for a reasonable price they will upgrade your unit to the newest versions capabilities. I haven't used it in my truck but use it all of the time in my Porsche and have been really happy with it. I would say it is more accurate in rural areas which is where I drive my car most. When in city driving, you pick up some background stuff at grocery stores and anywhere they have automatic door openers. So, in the city I turn down the volume.

As for your laser? I have a jammer and detector unit. When I get shot with the laser, I slow down to a respectable speed, turn the jammer off and let you track me at a legal speed.

I will admit a radar detector will not save you from a ticket everytime. I say it has cut my tickets by half or better. Money well spent in my opinion. For the other half I use my crazy good traffic lawyer skills.

I have a belltronics 9xx? it has been really good, but it acts up a lot. I would replace it for a V1 but have grown up a bit and slowed down a lot. Plus I don't drive the Trans Am daily anymore so I stay out of trouble.

Personally, I love those things; they represent another challenge. I know I miss several, maybe a lot. But anytime I get a high reading and the violator speed drops off I know there's a good chance there's a detector on board. On a typical stop, I'll knock 5-8 mph off so the fine will be lower. If I see any evidence of a detector, or strongly suspect one, whether on, off, on the seat, floor, dash, or whatever, I write the speed I locked. I understand why driver's may have them, but I also know there's only one purpose for them....to assist in violating the laws I'm enforcing. It's a game and I'm just one of the participants.

Why do you need to go over the speed limit anyway? Wasting more money that way (fuel and tickets).

Although we had a system called VASCAR when I was writing cites, Most of mine were based on speed estimation. That's naked eye observation based on experience. Most cops can look at a vehicle and tell you how fast it's moving within a two mile spread. It's still a well respected method of justifying a citation . At least in a court room.
Your best bet to avoid a citation is not to be the fastest thing on the road.
Determined thieves are going to steal and determined speederes are going to speed. Just don't whine about the consequences.
I watch people struggle and drive aggressively almost every day in L.A. traffic. I usually end up just behind or ahead of them or see them chatting with the CHP. Slow and steady wins the race, a lesson not usually learned in one's youth.
Having said that , I freely admit that exceed the posted limit on the freeway when conditions warrant. Traffic, weather and prevailing speed. There is always someone who wants to go faster than I do, so I let them.

I have 2 Passport 8500s, one in the wife's car, 1 in my truck, and have had almost all other kinds of detectors, including bells, whistlers, etc, and these are by far the best. They have more than paid for themselves, but I have also paid my fair share of tickets too-just another you play you pay result.

I second the PASSPORT. That thing is Awesome.

As far as a few of those cops on this forum......I respect your job, but there are so many ****** out there in the CHPS. I got a ticket in a car accident because there was no sign in the middle of a highway saying "No U-Turn."

Long story short........a woman forgot to drop her 3 kids off at the middle school here, and decided to slam on her brakes going 55 in the fast lane, and turn left across the median(where there was concrete) and go back to drop her kids off at school. I was in my GTO behind one car that was right behind her. I slid into her rear bumper adn the car behind me crossed the median into on comming traffic, but didnt hit anything. This lady didnt get hit, so she proceeded to drop her kids off at school, and then drive threw the accident scene without stopping. I had 2 witness's who testified, and I went to court over the ticket, but I got the ticekt, because there was no sign in the middle of the highway saying "No U-Turn." That CHP can kiss my edit !

Ohh........and it was only 7 days after I repainted my car. It was only cost about 7k to fix.
