Short in the headlight wiring harness?
Has anybody had a problem with the lamp out indicator on and an actual dead high beam, but if you flick the high beams on and off a few times it resets and the dead high beam comes on?

I've been having a similar issue with my drivers side low beam. Seems to pick and choose when it likes to work. Much like the intermittent windshield wipers.
I've gone thru the entire harness and found nothing wrong.
Last night I replaced the Front Control Module (FCM - $265cdn) that plugs into the side of the Power Distribution Module (PDM - $336cdn) and all my problems were solved.
Dodge sold 35,000 of these last year so apparently it is quite common to have these fail. The PDM is rarely the problem.
Hope this helps. I struggled with mine for a over a month and pulled everything apart looking for a quick fix. Both these are sealed units and quite expensive. I will be disecting the old one looking for a fix that I will hopefully be able to post later. I developed a free fix for the later model daytime running modules as well.

I didn't consider the multifunction switch due to the fact that only one lamp was out. If I read it correctly, then Evan3000 is having the same problem...just one side is out?

Do you pull atrailer much the older dodges had a weak something in the haedlight switch and woul act up if overloaded with trailer runnung lights we always ran a 10ga wire from the batt to switch in the cab then to the trailer maint wire at the trailer plug and solved the problem by going around it I was told the newer trucks didnt have this problem something to think about?
