Rotella vs. Delo
Ok gang, ordered Fleetguard filters from Genos, I assume they are better than the one Mopar would supply?

And, I believe I will use either Rotella or Delo but not sure which oil to go with

Any opionions on this?

Don't care about discussing Amsoil or any other oil. Just Rotella and Delo thanks!

I will still have my dealer do the oil changes, with my supplied filters and oil, and on the road I will carry extra filters and some oil, or can get it at any WalMart so can use the same oil for the life of the truck

And, does anyone know for sure if both Rotella and Delo meet the specs?

SAE 15W-40 API Service CI-4/SH

Have not checked on either myself yet, but figured someone here will know for sure

Thanks

Hunter
Re:Rotella vs. Delo
Heck, everyone agrees on oil - right? : ;D
Count me as a Rotella vote! ;D
I get a free dealer oil change at 5,000 miles. At 10,000 and 15,000 miles I'll go with Rotella.
BUT - at 20,000 miles I'm going with synthetic Delvac 1 and 10,000 mile change intervals thereafter. 8) 8) 8)

Re:Rotella vs. Delo
I'm a Delo user. Delo has a lower pour point (-38f) and makes for a better year round oil where you have dipping temps. Rotella is my second choice in dino oils.

Jerry

;D A fountain of Youth for diesel engines, my friend. ;D
Well, O.K. - maybe not, but it's darn good stuff.
Delvac 1 is the diesel version of Mobil 1. VW TDI enthusiasts swear by it (see TDIclub.com, I use it in my TDI Jetta and get 47 ave. MPG). Unlike many of the other so-called synthetics out there, Delvac 1 is a true synthetic - which means it ain't cheap. I get it from a distributor here for $80 a case (4 gallons).
--------------------
O.K. - So we all have favorite oils. No surprise there, eh?
The only real way to verify your oil, no matter what you chose, is doing it's job is by utilizing oil analysis. As far as I know, no one has yet done this procedure on the new Cummins in the '03's. Oil in '03's should stay cleaner (less soot) but will probably have as many contaminants (metals, fuel) as the prior generation Cummins.

Re:Rotella vs. Delo
According to many threads I've seen on various message boards, the Delo appears to always give good oil analysis readings. Add to that, the lower pour point, plus it's usually slightly less expensive than Rotella, that's what I'd recommend for a dinosuar oil. And I even ran Rotella for awhile. I don't miss the smell of it.

The Fleetguard Stratapores are good filters.

Re:Rotella vs. Delo
I have and will continue to do oil analysis on my 2003. Did the first one at 3000miles with the original oil. Oil was still good but did show high silicon. Could have been due to gasket sealers. Cummins website told me that Cummins uses Valvoline as the original oil. I would change the factory oil at 500 miles if I had it to do over.
I am using Rotella 15w40, it now has about 1500 miles on it and will do test at 3000. I have used Rotella for years because it is rated for both diesel and gas. So if you run a mixed fleet you only need to stock one oil. I called Shell tech line in Houston and the current oil meets all new specs which just went into effect Sept first. It will take awhile to use up the old bottles and then you will see the approval on them.

After 12,000 or 15,000 miles I am also going to Delvac 1 synthetic. I had a 1995 Ford Taurus which used Mobil 1 and ran it to 130,000 miles before I just sold it. The oil usage was minamial and with testing I ran 15,000 miles(highway) between oil changes and the oil was still good.

Re:Rotella vs. Delo
Hunter:

I have used both Rotella and the Delo (15W40) Diesel
Oil. My truck has almost 185,000 miles on it and back in
January I had the head off (blown headgasket ). The
inside of the engine was still very clean with no build-up
of any kind. I had used Rotella almost exclusively during
that time, with the exception of times I couldn't get it,
then I used Delo. About the time I had the headgasket
repaired, I noticed a "smell" everytime I changed oil
with the Rotella. Other Dodge CTD owners had mentioned
this to me but I never noticed it on my truck. To me,
the "smell" was similar to hot spilled oil burning off of the
engine or manifold. On my truck, it would take about 300-
500 miles for this "smell" to go away.

I talked with a representative from Shell, and he told me
that Shell had changed the "recipe" of the oil somewhat
and that may be what was causing the odor. So, I switched
to Delo in late March and have no "odor" with the Delo Oil.

FYI, the Delo Oil does somewhat better in the "Four Ball
Wear Test" than the Rotella, but I still think the Rotella
is good oil based on what my engine looked like back in
January. And anyone that knows me will tell you I run my
truck very hard! ;D

Hope this has helped you some!

---------
John_P

Re:Rotella vs. Delo
Delo is the best oil ever invented. You can't do any better. You really should buy it by the 55 gal drum. ;D ;D

Now, understand I work for ChevronTexaco and would like to retire someday. ;D

Actually it specs out pretty good. The lower pour point is attractive, even with our mild climates. I like it because of it's availability and price. Usually cheaper than Rotella and can be found at just about any retail outlet and some convenience stations.
The truck had Rotella in it when I got it, then I changed it to Hydroclear Power-D from Conoco. It is also a good oil but real hard to find, but I worked for Conoco and got an employee's discount.

To sum it up, you can't really go wrong with either brand
