This may be a stupid topic but im curious what you guys think on this. How often or if at all should you reset the mpg computer. From what i understand it uses the last 3 tanks to average out the results. I think since i have owned my truck i have only reset it a couple times, each time im not sure how long it takes before it is acurate.

i reset mine all the time since it does not work accurately anyways! LOL.... maybe just hoping that it will come to life and work as advertised.

I hardly ever reset mine. I figure it will average out better that way. It still isn't very accurate.

I reset mine with every tankful. It seems to be closer that way!

I have been resetting my OVH at every fillup since new. The overhead and the hand calculation vary (+2 to -.5) gallons at fillup. At the end of the year I have my totals on fuel & $. The interesting one is the difference at the end of the year hand calculation MPG (15.66) and the overhead MPG (16.6). The Overhead is almost 1 MPG higher (0.94) for the last two years. From my observation the overhead is more accurate if you do not reset. I hate to see the grand total at the end of the year so far 1506 gallons of diesel and $4506 this year .

i reset mine at every fillup. it is usually around 4 mpg's high. pos.

i dont have my manual on me but i believe it states that the truck computes the mpg with the stats from the last few tanks of fuel. With that being said i noticed myself every time i reset it does fluctuate and seems to be on the high side until the 2nd tank.

For an '04, when you reset it starts calculating from zero at that point. I find it to be most accurate if after I fill up, turn on the key, reset the reading, then start the truck. This usually puts the overhead within .5 mpg.

I have reset mine at every fillup since new. I reset trip, mpg and hours. I hand calculate every fillup and usually fill up around 28 gals. Mine has never been accurate compared to hand calculated, even when stock. But it is consistent depending on the current mod stack I run. So I can generally tell after half a tank what my general mileage is, either up or down. With my current triple stack it is consistently 5.1mpg high from hand calculated.

This works for me and if something is really off I can tell.

I never reset mine. It's within .5 mpg of my hand calculated mileage.

I was actually gonna post up tonight with the same question. I filled up tonight and I have been averaging +2 to +3.5 with the overhead compared to hand calculating. I mean I finished the last tank tonight with hand calc of 19.96 a gallon with the overhead showing 23.4.

Go figure.

I reset mine each time I pull our toyhauler so I can get the towing average. If I hand calculate my mpg's when the pump shuts off, my overhead is pretty accurate. It's when I top off the tank and then hand calculate is when mine is off by 1-1.5mpg's.

I alway reset mine just as I am going down hill from Donner Summit or other long grades. 99 MPG makes me feel good.
