Ok so i am going to be bringing my truck in to the dealership because it is blowing alot of white smoke at start up. But my question is, will they know or care if a tank of red die off road diesel was ran threw it recently when i was using it at our farm for a weekend. That was the only fuel we had there, and it was ran till empty and filled with regular diesel now. Can they tell if it was ran? and is it even illegal to run it in a vehicle that is registered for street use if it was ran during off road use?? thanks matt

If you just used it on the property and used it all up, shouldnt be any legal issues, now if you got caught with it in your tank and a DPS officer dips it, be prepared for a hefty fine in addition to paying to have it taken to a dealership to have the fuel system flushed of the off-road-use only diesel.


As for the dealership for warranty stuff, they MAY try to pull something and say because you ran some offroad fuel it led to injector problems(or whatever problem you are having) because it wasnt filtered as well, had water in it, just contaminated in general, etc, etc....
Dealerships are finding more and more reasons to void warranties and not pay for repairs now, but if you find one that doesnt do that and is willing to work with you youll be in great shape.

Change your fuel filter, Thats the easiest way to tell if have ran any dyed fuel in your truck, I know in canada its illegal to have dyed diesel in on road trucks.

its illegal to put it in any vehicle with registered tags as from what i have been told by the law and oil companies. change the filter. they may try a reflash and not check the fuel system. it will depend on how much of a stickler the tech is looking at. never had any problems with 2 of the techs i let work on my 07 at the dealer where i bought it at. then they let another guy work on it and a red flag was thrown because i had a bd outlook monitor on the truck no program just the monitor

What year is it? If it is 07.5 and up, they may give you a really hard time if they find out. I'm not sure if the sulfur content is correct in off road for ULSD requirements.

Change the FF. Run some additive.

Red diesel is not a special blend. It's what you get at the local pump plus some dye so the Gmen can make sure you don't run the family pickup on road tax exempt/ag diesel.

If you believe some refinery is providing starving farmers with "the good stuff" you already know ford owns cummins.

From what I understand, when the change to ULSD was happening, off road diesel was the last to be converted. It is still possible, like the thread above says, that some off road diesel is still 500 PPM or higher. I know that in some locations, off road is sold at pumps just like regular diesel, however, where I come from, it is only sold as a bulk fuel, so it is possible that it comes from a different source, possibly with different requirements for refining.

I understand the concept that the dye is added to show as a sign that it is not taxed for road use.

I did not say that I was right, and my word was the only one, just that it was possible. If you're going to compare my intelligence with the erroneous belief that some people have about ford owning cummins, at least put the 'g' in there to make it legit.

The use of dyed fuel in a vehicle registered for on road use is illegal. The dealer can give you crap about the red fuel if they find it. Certainly change the filter before it goes in.

It usually takes about two to three tanks of non-dyed to get the red out. You definitely need to change the FF and put as much fuel through it as you can before you take it in. Service places are required to report dyed fuel use when they find it. It is very much against the law, to the tune of $2500 for the first offense, to use dyed fuel in a highway use vehicle.

Ours is still 500ppm sulfur around here too.

I was up in Leggett, Ca area on Saturday and at the gas station the only Diesel they sold was red dye, but the pricing on it included taxes? It was 2.299 per gallon? I thought it was odd because gas was about .20 more than at home and the dyed diesel was about .20 more than home so it wasn't like the pricing was out of whack like most tourist area stations.
