Unhappy Queston about exhaust soot on bumper

I have about 5k on my new(first) diesel. it is a sb, 04.5. it is leaving a heavy soot on the rear quarter panel & corner of the bumper. IS this normal ?????

So far the truck has been petty good for a early...early 2004.5 "600" model. I have a 11-20-03 build date. I get about 19-21 mpg.

thanx,

David

Not related to your question, but how can you have a 600 if it was built in November of 03. I thought they didnt start them until January.

Anyway I only have 1000 miles on mine and it is Patriot Blue, So I really dont notice. I do know that if I get on it, I can make it smoke a little puff.

Johnnyh,

I was surprised as well. I'm guessing it was a prototype model or something. Maybe an engine off the line before it became productional.

It has the 325 rated horespower on the motor. Also has the dang cat.

I was worried at first, but the truck has been pretty good so far.

Mine does the same thing. It is very noticable on a white sport with the painted bumper.

Soot on the qtr panel and bumper indicates that exhaust and CO readily makes it way into the bed if a canopy is installed. I added a downward pointing exhaust tip and sealed up the rear of the bed, especially the tailgate. An exhaust that exited at the side under the bumper would make a lot more sense.

Mine was nasty enough with the OE angle cut exhaust pipe but when I cut some of it off to add the Magnaflow tip, the problem worsened. (pics in gallery). The EDGE EZ on #4 is probably contributing to some more black stuff, too. Just stock up on a little more of your favorite car wash I guess.

I just ordered a Gibson exhaust tip from Summit Racing. It is a 18 inch, 4 inch inlet, 4 inch outlet, polished stainless steel turn-down tip. The part number is GIB-400413 and it has a built-in clamp. I tried unsuccessfully to get it locally but no one could get it. Summit told me that it was a special order item and that they would order it from Gibson and ship it to me. I'm hoping that it will keep the rear bumper from getting so covered with soot. After driving is heavy rain, the rear quarter panel has black soot streaks running down it! I have always had Gibson tips on my gas powered rams and the quality is very good.

I also went with the Megs tip from Gino's, because I liked the clean look of no clamp.

It helped, but didn't completely eliminate the soot on the bumper. I suppose I could scoot it out a little, but there is just barely a little soot mark by the time the rest of the truck is dirty, and the soot washes off easily.

Huntindad- If that mpg is hand calculated you should be really happy with it. I haven't seen a post where a 600 comes even close!
