Question about steel wheels.

I'm looking for a cheap set of factory takeoffs to run in the winter. I came across a set of some steel wheels at a local tire dealer. They aren't the cheesy painted steel wheels, but the chrome plated version. They only want $150 for the set. They have the lug nuts and covers as well.

The only issue I have is that one of the wheels has a small section of the lip thats slightly bent. I'm talking maybe 1" long.

The dealer says it won't affect balancing or seating the rim on the bead.

I doubt you would even notice once the tire is mounted.

Can you work the lip with a hammer and get it straighted back out?

Before you buy them make sure they are 17" or you'll have problems.

At that price you could buy them and try it out... If they don't work you could go to a junkyard, etc. and track down 1 more and you would still be money ahead.... I think my steel take-offs in Alaska cost about $75 for steelies on my F-250 (16 inch). The 17s were near the $100 a piece.

It is a decent price. I have had many steel wheels "fixed" after making the wrong choice off road. That small a dent should not cause any problem.

Maybe you could have them spin the rim on the balancer, just so you could make sure it isn't also bent?

I bought a set of steel wheels for a Ford I had, and when I went to get tires mounted they showed me that one really wobbled. You couldn't really tell it was damaged from looking at it...
