Anybody know what might cause it to go out? Now I have to guess what position the shift selector is in

Burned out lite bulb .
Not sure on that yr. , but I have seen sometimes , they will use a piece of plastic or cable to bring lite from an other source , anything else go out / any work in that area ?
Maybe something got bumped out of place .

This is a fluorescent gas lit display. No light bulb. Everything else works.

Reprogram it back to stock with your smarty and see if it fixes it. I have heard sometimes programmers can cause this problem on 03-04 trucks. It may be your TM setting.

Thanks. I was thinking it might have been caused by the smarty but wanted to ask the general question first before suggesting the smarty. I recently lent it out and had to go back to stock for a week.

I'll do it and see.

when you have the shift disable enabled on the smarty you will lose the light. take the shift disable option off and the light will be back
