Question Power Steering Groan

I have noticed over the last few weeks that when I drive the truck and "slighty" turn the steering wheel to the right, I am getting a low level groaning noise. It appears to be coming from the Power Steering Pump. I can duplicate the noise while parked but it is not as loud as when driving it. Truck must be completely warmed up and at operating temp for it to do it and only does it when turning to the right slightly. Full turn doesn't create it, nor does turning to the left.

Took it to Dealer and service writer was able to hear the noise. Tech that worked on the truck said he couldn't duplicate it. When I duplicated it for him and the service writer, he said this is normal.

I don't believe any noise that wasn't there when I bought thing is normal. Especially one that is intermittent. Has anyone had any problems similiar and what was the fix for this?

I've also been noticing a "groan" when I turn but I haven't narrowed it down as much as you have. My first guess was a bearing but now that I've read your post I'm going to turn the steering wheel while sitting still and see if it's the power steering pump. With the stereo turned off I can hear what sounds like a tire rubbing on a wheel well when I turn a corner. Haven't noticed if left or right makes a difference and it only takes a very small turn so I know it isn't actually the wheel well....it just sounds like that. It's either a wheel bearing or the pump.

I also hear this groaning sound (very subtle) rarely, only when the truck has been running for a while (half hour or more); it happens no matter how much I turn the wheel. I had the truck in for service a few weeks ago, mentioned the sound, the service guys claimed they had heard of similar situations with these trucks. After they looked at the truck they were unable to find anything wrong/worn out or unusual with the rig. I'll be interested to hear what you guys find out about this.

I have 1400 miles on big red and about a week ago it started doing the same (I assume its the power steering pump) driving to work so when I got home I checked the fluid and it was barely on the end of the stick. So I went to all parts strores and no one has the +4 so I had to go get raped by the ******* for $10 for a quart. Put it in and its been quiet until tonight when I started up to head home and it was doing it again only louder. Fluid up full this time. Any ideas?

The groan is common to all Dodge CTD's it seems. Cold weather seems to make it worse. If it really bothers you suck the old PS fluid out and replace it with synthetic PS fluid. I haven't done it yet, but I've read it works well.
