Question Plugs Or Tape under truck?????

I’ve heard about tape in place of plugs under the cab? I’m gonna be looking at a truck tomorrow. What should the plug look like? Is it a rubber plug the fits from the outside or a plug that snaps in from the inside? Where bouts would these be under the truck?

Thanx,

David

They are body plugs and they be right up under the cab along the lower inside edge. I'll bet they are missing. I checked some new ones out the other day on the dealers' lot and all the 3/4 ton units had TAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine is an 03, picked up in June of 03 and it had tape, they ponied up the plugs no problem but I think they are switching to tape from plugs by the way it looks!

I have an 04 purchased in OCT 03...and it's tape all the way. I just crawled underneath and sprayed Undercoating along the body panel. Got tired of the 31570R17's bouncing rocks underneath all the time. It's quieter now..

Tomorrow having rear window and frt windows tinted ($80 total) and having XM installed too...

Pics to follow....

HuntinDAD did you ever come up to Ft Hood area on the truck info I sent you?

Rossn2,

I spoke with Lucy up there. They didn't want to give me what I needed for my trade. Guess I'll try to sell it myself. the folks here in Austin(Maxwell) are trying to yo-yo me around. Oh well...

If I do get a Dodge, I'd like to see where you sprayed the undercoating at.

thanx,

David

My 4.5 came with metal snap-in plugs. I posted a picture in my gallery. That was one of the first things I looked for when the truck arrived.....whether or not they used tape.

ordered my '04 on 9/9/3 and got it 10/13/3, it had the plugs in it but I sprayed extra undercoat all around them from fear of moisture gettin in through there and rotting things out. would recommend this to everyone.

Is it actually a cat, or is it just a resonator?

I was under the assumption that they haven't gone to cats yet, except for California vehicles.

I don't know for sure that's a cat in my picture gallery. I heard the 2004.5 has a cat.......that's one of the reasons it's 50-state legal.....isn't it?

Anyone with a 2003 or earlier truck have a "pumpkin" in their exhaust system like the one in my picture gallery?

I have a 2003 California version and it has something in front of the muffler -- I was hoping it was a resonator rather than a catalytic converter.

The truck I looked at had the metal plugs from the inside. What did you guys use to sparay the underside? Was it a shop spray or did you do it your selves?

Thanx,

David

I just bought can spray at Wally World for less than $3 a can and crawled underneath. I sprayed the floor pan, from the frame over to the bottom of the doors. One can per side....

I am not sure that your picture represents the ports I saw covered with tape yesterday. I did see a snap-in plug like you picture, but it was on the floor pan of the passenger compartment.

The tape I saw, and showed to the salesman, was on the vertical on the opposite of side of the rocker panel. There were about eight holes to a side on the quadcab covered with tape. The corners of the tape were already beginning to come loose.

Am I wrong about this?

Anyone have a part number for the proper plug?

The number I got from the parts department was: 4860953AA, but no one was sure if this was the item and knew nothing about the tape/rubber plug issue.
