Pinging sound - is this normal?
I noticed this morning when going thru the drive-thru for my morning coffee, while waiting at the window, all the lovely sounds of my Cummins were reflecting off the walls for me to enjoy. Besides the "normal" diesel sounds, I noticed what I would describe as a pinging (like a gasser does with crappy gas) sound at idle. I took it out of drive into park and the sound lessened but it was still there. Back to drive and it increased. I have a feeling that taking it in and out of drive had more to do with the RPM than anything else.
Anyway, am I hearing the injectors or what? Is this a normal CTD sound? My PSD was so loud I couldn't hear any of the subtle sounds of that motor.

I have seen this issue in several other threads on this site. From what I understand, it is "normal" for the 600 to sound like that (although not all of them do it). Mine does it and so do many others. I have read that it is due to the three injection events... someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

Yeah. I kinda figured it was normal. But, I thought I'd check anyway. It's fun discovering these things.
FWIW . . . . the cab smell is still there and I smell it outside the cab too. I guess it must be the coating on the engine burning off. That must be why others say it disappears over time.
Strangely, the 70mph vibe seems to be lessened. Maybe I'm becoming de-sensitized or something. I don't know. Or maybe things are breaking in (or just breaking ).
I'm loving it and I think the ride is WAY better than my 2wd Ext Cab LWB Ford - even with the Ranchos. I just hope for improvement in the mpg. That's a real disappointment so far (but then again I haven't given it much chance with just 150 mi ).

Yeah, I've still got the funny smell @ 1400+ miles... and for a while there I thought my 70MPH vibe was going away too, but then just this morning, I discovered that it had strangely migrated to 75MPH!!! Back it off to 70 and it's a lot smoother than it used to be... crank it up to 80 and it's like butta... back down to 75 and it shakes worse than ever!!

I get the same sound with my 555,it reminds me of the dreded cackle on the 7.3 Litre Ford powerstrokes, mine sounds just like it.
The 600 is so much quieter. I have gone thru at least 3 drive-thrus and have not yet had to turn off the engine. This is something I could NEVER do with the 7.3.

Has your mileage improved any over time?

Maybe I am so use to the 2nd generation engine being so loud,I can actually hear the engine run on the new one.

My powerstroke had the dreaded cackle and it would also ping after a big pull up a hill. I am glad that I have the industry leaders diesel motor... I do not think I have the ping in my 555 but I just enjoy the radio alot anyhow...

Strangely, the 70mph vibe seems to be lessened. Maybe I'm becoming de-sensitized or something. I don't know. Or maybe things are breaking in (or just breaking ).
You know what< I noticed the same thing the other night coming home. I popped it up to 70 (I always drive 65 cause of the vib) and the vib wasn't nearly as noticable as it use to be. Maybe another 1K and it will dissapear all together

You know...it is "normal" for a gasoline engine to "ping" when the timing is way off ...BUT does it being "normal for the 600" mean we don't worry about it or try to get it looked at by the dealer?
Is pre-ignition possible on a diesel?

detonation or pinging rattle, new 555
As a new 555 owner, I too am concerned about what sounds like preignition or pinging rattle upon acceleration (800 miles new). Is it possible for CTD's to preignite? I drove the first tank of fuel like an old lady (17.8 MPG first tank) and wonder if it is fuel quality or carbon buildup already because of low, easy RPM's or just plain new truck........BTW, the lock actuator on drivers side failed at 250 miles.
